At the end of the studies, a multidisciplinary innovation project (15 credits) will be realised for the needs of working life. As the needs and competency requirements change constantly in working life, customer-focused thinking, creativity and cooperation skills as well as an ability to tolerate diversity and insecurity are needed in addition to expertise.

Choosing a main subject or field of specialization, qualifications

Our Business studies offer four paths:

Marketing, welness tourism, financial management or innovative business and entrepreneurship.

Marketing experts are directed at diverse sales, marketing and customer service tasks in domestic and export markets. One area on the rise is electronic marketing and the use of websites in customerships, where there are many interesting jobs. During the studies, you will have practical skills for marketing communications and the design and implementation of campaigns, as well as a number of corporate contacts.

The aim of the specialization is to introduce students the phenomenon of tourism as a significant global industry and as a topic of academic and applied study.

The multifaceted tourism cluster is formed by companies such as those of providing accommodation, catering, travel and transport services as well as different types of leisure services and activities. The changes in customer demand influences the development of tourism and hospitality industry, which also includes a wide range of other organizations and actors.

Financial Management studies will train you to manage various duties. The studies include both financial accounting and management accounting. Practical issues in bookkeeping, taxation and payroll management are dealt with in authentic customer situations. Modern software and digital tools are used extensively in studies.

In Innovative Business and entrepreneurship, you will acquire extensive business skills with the help of study units, projects, cooperative society operations, pop up entrepreneurship and working life encounters. During the studies, you will learn to act independently, as an entrepreneur, and in cooperation by creating networks. The studies will train you to work in responsible duties under someone else (at the expert and management level), in entrepreneurship counselling tasks or as an entrepreneur.

Thesis

The students are complemented by the thesis, where the student should apply their previously learned knowledge and skills. The thesis can be a development or research project made on a working life commission. In addition to the growth of one’s own expertise, the purpose of the thesis is to benefit working life.

Evaluation and feedback

The evaluation criteria for each course are described in general terms in the study guide and in more detail in the study plan of the course. A variety of tasks and study performances can be evaluated including exams, assignments, projects, presentations. Project work is common in public and private sectors, where time management is crucial. For this reason, how well students stay on the assigned schedules can be one evaluation criterion. In working life, much of the work is teamwork and the end result depends more on how the team members work together than on the skills of one person. In studying, evaluation often focuses on an individual, but sometimes a group’s actions and products are evaluated. Besides teachers, other students can perform as peer evaluators. Evaluation can focus on professional skills and general working life skills such as project work, communication and interaction, and feedback skills.

The grade for each course is expressed on a scale of 0-5 or verbally as pass/fail. In addition, students can get oral or written feedback with the intention of helping them learn to know their personal strengths and areas for improvement. Thus, the course evaluation also acts to develop students’ skills in evaluating their own learning and development, for instance by performing self evaluations.

Feedback

Turku University of Applied Sciences adheres to a quality system which defines how feedback is collected. One method of collecting feedback from students is to ask them to fill in a written survey during or at the end of a course. This feedback is to be saved for the use of the teacher of the course and the head of education and research. They process the feedback in discussion with the teachers; feedback will direct the development of teaching and training. In addition to course-based feedback, feedback discussion meetings are organized regularly and the summaries of these meetings are processed according to the process description (in the quality system) in the board of directors of the degree programme.
