Programme description

Study objectives

The Master’s Programme in Engineering leads to a working life-oriented vocational qualification. The objective of the programme is to provide Bachelors of Engineering resources for enhancing the performance of leadership and expert tasks that require good competence.

The programme specifically promotes business, supervision and project management skills. Working during studies and linking the learning assignments and the thesis (implemented as a development project) with work duties allow the simultaneous development of the employer organization’s operations.

Structure of studies and study contents

The curriculum consists of methodological and business studies, advanced professional studies and a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS cr).
The planned length of the studies is two (2) years and the studies are designed to be completed while working full-time.

However, practical work often requires more extensive business, financial and customer relationship management skills. The business studies address this need for competence, providing students with an opportunity to learn more about the business skills essential for work and to gain a general understanding of technology-oriented business. Moreover, methodological studies offer the prerequisites for understanding and utilizing scientific knowledge and a foundation for the planning and completion of a thesis project.

Students can choose between seven (7) professional modules. The modules are offered according to need after the students’ interest in each module has been mapped using an advance assignment in connection with the application process. At least all modules with a minimum of ten (10) participants will be organized. Students are notified of the organized modules before they are required to accept a study place.

Choosing a main subject or field of specialization, qualifications

The degree allows graduates to apply for positions that require a Master’s Degree in engineering.


The thesis will be implemented as a development project with a clear research approach and a close link with practical work. If the employer of the student cannot provide a suitable development assignment or the student is not employed, the various RDI projects of Turku University of Applied Sciences can offer the student contacts with working life.


Internationalization is based on the students’ needs, for example related to their assignment. The thesis may include an international perspective, for example through participation in an international conference or seminar in the relevant field. The international perspective also supports the requirements of language skills for completing the degree. Some parts of the teaching are given in English and a great deal of the assignment source material is from international professional and academic publications.

Career opportunities

After graduating from a university of applied sciences, many professional engineers find employment in positions where the main focus is on technical competence and its development and application. As their careers proceed, some of them concentrate on technical expert tasks, while others focus on supervisor, project management, marketing and organizational development tasks, for instance.

Possible jobtitles after graduation

Design engineer, production engineer, supervisor, marketing manager, product manager, production manager, quality manager, product development manager and different specialist tasks.

Postgraduate study opportunities

Graduates from the programme are eligible for scientific postgraduate studies. Universities may require, for example, supplementary studies before granting postgraduate study rights.


The programme will be developed according to the principles of continuous improvement. In the development work, feedback from the students and working life as well as their initiatives have a key role. Feedback is collected with, for instance, student questionnaires and group-specific development discussions.

Pedagogic approaches

The studies are based on blended learning. There will be two contact days per month. The studies emphasize communality and teamwork. At the beginning of the studies, the students also prepare an individual study plan (ISP) that is closely related to the implementation of the thesis.

In modern organizations, almost all work involves close cooperation and interaction with other people. The objective of the studies is to improve the students’ ability to effectively cope with different organizational interaction and to help students to understand the significance and role of supervisory work in leadership. The Master of Engineering degree provides good skills for approaching and solving problems.


The assessment methods vary according to the objectives of the courses. Assessment may focus on the outcome (e.g. a report or a seminar presentation), on the process (the student’s activity and performance during the course) or on both. Students receive regular feedback on their performance from their teachers. Peer- and self-assessment as well as commissioner feedback on performance are also utilized. Assessment is based on the degree assessment framework.
