Objective

The participants are able to describe packaging techniques and are able to select an appropriate packaging material for the application. The participants are able to choose appropriate analysis techniques for packaging material characterization. The participants are able to consider environmental and recycling aspects in package design.

Materials

The course will be held in English (reporting). Materials in Optima. Students gather also their own web-material.

Project plan, Project reporting, Learning Cafe, Laboratory work, Demonstrations, Final report and seminar.
Total hours 5 x 26,7 h.
The course consist of individual book exam (2 cr), a customer project and laboratory work (3 cr)

Content scheduling

36: Start, Group formation, Briefing of the DevelopmentTtask given by a Company.
44-501: Packing technology starts. Packing development case will be presented. Individual learning, Group work, Packaging Workshops, Project meetings, Project work
50: Going through the packaging task.

The course will be implemented together with Food Engineering under couse name Food and Packaging. In this course, Materials Technology and Food Engineering students for groups of 5 persons where they work together.The main task is to develop together a new food product and a packaging for it . The Food Eng. students are responsible for product development and Materials Tech. students are responsible for packaging development. Furthermore, Business students execute a Customer Survey, which will be connected to reporting.

H-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The calculation of final grade for Materials Technology students:

35% Development Task + 30% Other Tasks + 35% Book Exam +/- 1 grade from Laboratory work activity

Product and package design tasks will be evaluated together.
For Materials Tech. students the evaluation of task will be:
-75% packaging design task + reporting
- 25% whole development report

The report will be evaluated based on Chemical Engineering's general reporting assessment criteria.
