Objective

The student is able to determine the main engine power for ships and boats with one method and make a sea trial prediction. The student can use the basic concepts of ships and boats motions in regular waves in his/her work.

Content

The course of Resistance, Powering and Seakeeping of Ships relates to engine power prediction, propeller design, and motions of ships and other structures in regular waves.

Teaching methods

Theory, model tests, exercises.

Content scheduling

Short recap on fluid mechanics, ship resistance and power requirement, ship propellers, propeller design and optimization, fitting the main engine to the propeller, seaworthiness and maneuvering.

Evaluation scale

H-5

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam 24 p. Possible 4 bonus points from given exercises
Grades:
33% = 8p = 1 (this has to be reached without the bonus points, the stability calculation in midterm 2 has to be right)
41% max =2
55% max =3
70% max =4
80% max =5
max = 24+4 = 28 p
