Objective

Examination and Treatment Procedures for Internal Medicine Patients 5 cr SITHO
Objectives
Students will
- Learn to describe the underlying mechanisms and symptoms, examinations and medical treatment of common internal diseases, as well as monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment
- Become familiar with common drugs used to treat internal diseases, their desirable effect, as well as side- and adverse effects
- Know how to observe the effects of medication and take appropriate action
- Be able to cooperate with a multiprofessional expert network to integrate nutritional care and guidance into the treatment of internal medicine and surgical patients
- Become familiar with the most common clinical physiology examinations and know how to describe their significance
- Become familiar with the most common laboratory tests and know how to describe their significance
- Know how to advise patients in preparing for examinations and after the examination
- Know how to collect high-quality specimens and interpret them
- Identify infection risks related to the collection and handling of specimens and know how to minimise them

The study unit comprises 2 cr of studies offered in English
Internal Medicine and Pharmacology 2 cr SIFA
- Heart diseases and pharmacotherapy
- Respiratory disorders and pharmacotherapy
- Endocrine disorders and pharmacotherapy
- Musculoskeletal disorders and pharmacotherapy
- Neurologic disorders and pharmacotherapy
- Intestinal disorders and pharmacotherapy
- Kidney and liver disorders and pharmacotherapy
Clinical Physiology and Clinical Laboratory Tests 2 cr KLFL
- The most common laboratory tests (blood and urine tests)
- Preparation of patients and the importance of it
- Patient guidance during specimen collection
- Standardisation and quality management of specimen collection
- Collection of venous and skin puncture specimens
- Collection of urine specimens and chemical screening of urine
- Complications in specimen collection
- Storage and transportation of specimens
- Point-of-care testing and the quality management of point-of-care instruments
- Guidance of patients and preparation for examinations
- The most common clinical physiology examinations (e.g., ECG registration)
- Nursing in the administration of examinations
Nutritional Care 1 cr RAV2
- Nutritional care and guidance for internal medicine and surgical patients and special diets of diseases
