Objective

Having completed the course the student
• Has better understanding on her/his own cultural values and biases
• Is aware of intellectual, psychological and social prerequisites for having a global business mindset
• Is able to recognize the nature and main differences of local, regional, national, continental and global businesses
• Has a better understanding of how different cultures perceives e.g. time and space, verbal and nonverbal communication, or approaches to teamwork
• Has better cultural competence to interact with people from different cultures.

No examinations. Student can re-attempt the course by completing missing parts of the course within one month of the course end.

Student workload

135 hours of student work is divided into 14 weeks of study and includes
50 hours Contact sessions (lectures, visitors, business portfolio creation, TUAS international week activities, trip to Helsinki)
40 hours individual research, tasks, reflection and reading
45 hours Business Portfolio Creation in a small group

Content scheduling

The course starts on 16 Jan 2019 and has 14 weekly contact sessions. The timetable is preliminary and is subject to changes due to guest lecture/visitor timetables.

The course focuses on developing student's own global business mindset and capabilities to work in different business cultures. The course includes topics such as cultural frameworks and awareness, different business cultures and their impact on communication, organisational behaviour, business relationships and emerging business opportunities.

The course includes:
Lectures, group discussions, readings, individual and group assignments
Visitors to share own experiences and learnings,
TUAS international week activities in Salo (week 14)
Trip to Helsinki to visit selected companies with global business mindset

Assessment methods and criteria

Personal reflection diary and other personal tasks
Group work including Business culture portfolio
Active participation and discussion in contact sessions, company visits and TUAS international week activities
Late returns (individual and group assignments) affect assessment.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

The student has not participated in classes or very limited participation, company visits and TUAS international week activities in Salo.
Personal reflection diary is incomplete and all personal tasks are not returned.
The student is not contributed group work and all group work tasks are not returned.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student is able to:

-identify main concepts from cultural frameworks
-identify different working practices in different business cultures
-identify the importance of cross-cultural competences and global business mindset in business situations and shows some ability to use them.

Limited communication and contribution to discussions and group assignments, several absences.
All assignments returned. The student raises obvious points and arguments are partly irrelevant, confused and remain on a very general level.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student is able to:

-identify main concepts from cultural frameworks and shows understanding of how they can be used in practice
-understand the importance of cross-cultural competences and global business mindset in business situations and demonstrates ability to use them in practice.
-explain business practices of different cultures and is able to identify challenges relating to his/her own culture in doing business in another culture.

Communicates and contributes to discussions and group assignments. All assignments returned according to instructions and on time. The outputs focus on key points, but remain on a general level.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to:

-explain the concepts from cultural frameworks and apply them.
-to adapt and adjust his/her communication style in various intercultural situations.
-acknowledge personal development areas
-see multiculturalism as beneficial and richness
-use global business mindset and suggest approaches in intercultural business situations

Active communication and contribution to discussions and group assignments. All assignments returned according to the instructions and on time. The outputs show evidence of insight and capacity for argumentation.
