o Theory and practice of the most common computational tools used in bioinformatics

Oppimateriaalit

The course material is provided in Optima web learning platform.

Opetusmenetelmät

The course is web course built on Optima web learning platform and it is task based implematation with mid and final assingments.

Tenttien ajankohdat ja uusintamahdollisuudet

The course have no exam because assessment is based on assingments.

Pedagogiset toimintatavat ja kestävä kehitys

Course language is English. Information retrieval from journal and other databases has a central role.

Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat

No alternative methods of attainment for implementation.

Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus

The emphasis is in the individual learning by solving assingments:
Individual studying: 68 h
Mid and final assingments: 65 h
Tasks work is conducted continuously on every week of the course.
The course includes 13 assessed assingments meaning about 5h / assingment.

Sisällön jaksotus

The course takes 8 weeks and it is divided into weekly topics and tasks.

Year 2020 the weeks are:
Week 19: Starting questionnaire, Introduction, DNA databases, DNA sequence analysis: Genome Projects
Week 20: Protein databases, Protein sequence analysis
Week 21: Use of Protein Structure Data
Week 22: Pair Alignment, Multiple Alignment
Week 23: Gene Expression: Microarrays, Biostatistics
Week 24: Systems Biology: Integration of Data
Week 25: Protein Structure: Determination, Comparative Modeling
Week 26: Final task

Every weekly topic includes mid-assignments, which will open at the beginning of the week and will be closed in two weeks

Viestintäkanava ja lisätietoja

Student need to have basic knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry.

Places are divided between Turku University of Appllied Sciences and other Universities of Applied Sciences so that 50 % of students are accepted from Turku University of Appllied Sciences and 50 % of the students are accepted from other Universities of Applied Sciences (e.g. 30 students from TUAS, 30 from other UAS). If places become available after enrollment perioid, the students may also be accepted from waiting list.

Arviointiasteikko

H-5

Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet

Assessment is based on the assingments. All the tasks are worth of 2 points except the final task is 6 points so totally 30 points can be gained and 40 % from points (12 p) is minimun to pass.
12 p --> grade 1
15 p --> grade 2
19 p --> grade 3
23 p --> grade 4
27 p --> grade 5

If task is not returned on time, the points will be reduced by 1 point / task. Points per task and relation between the points and the grades will be updated closer the couse starting date. All tasks must be accepted before any credits can be gained.

Esitietovaatimukset

Student should have some previous knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry.
