Objective

The objective is that the students will have understanding about why alternatives for current fuels and drive systems are being developed. After the course, the students will be familiar with global warming and climate change, and how road transportation influences these problems. Also, after passing the course, the students will be acquainted with different fuel and drive system options for vehicles. The options discussed will cover those already in use and those that will possibly be used in the future. Also, the students will know basics about the newest developments in traditional internal combustion engines as well as about different exhaust emission components, principles of their formation, and possibilities to reduce emissions.

Content

The course introduces facts related to greenhouse emissions and climate change. The course will cover current and oncoming fuel options which will possibly be added to the fuel spectrum, or maybe gradually replace conventional fuels like gasoline and diesel. These fuels are alcohols (methanol, ethanol), gaseous fuels (LPG, CNG, LNG, biogas) and biodiesel (different generations). Hydrogen will be covered as a fuel for combustion engines and for the fuel cell.New drive system part of the course covers hybrid and electric drives, fuel cell vehicles, as well as new combustion strategies like the so called HCCI engine. Also, the latest innovations in conventional internal combustion engine technology will be discussed.
