Content

On this course, the students will focus on the basics of academic research, the research process and writing academic text. The students will learn about the concepts and methods of art research, image analysis as well as the potential of art research. The students will gain the necessary skills for critical interpretation and analysis of art and media imagery The students will also deepen their skills in evaluating and analysing the visual culture.
The studies are completed according to implementation plan through exercises, lecture journals, essays and/or exams, and by attended contact teaching sessions, instruction, artist introductions, lectures and/or excursions.

The Animation and Screenwriting course introduces the basics of screenwriting; character, plot, tension, world, theme, synopsis. Through exercises, the student will gain an understanding of storytelling and scriptwriting from an animation perspective. The course will focus on developing story lines and practicing short format through writing, drawing and discussion.

Description
The course introduces the main stages in the history of animation. The course includes the viewing and analysis of different animated films and an introduction to the domestic and international animation industry. In addition, the course examines current phenomena in the animation industry and sustainable development approaches in animation production.

Students will be introduced to basic principles of animating puppets, lighting and cinematography in Stop Motion production.

During the course students will be working in small groups. These groups will function as a production teams that produces each a short stop motion production (duration 2-4 minutes).

This course is second part of a bigger ensemble. The first part will start already in Autumn 2024 and will focus on preproduction (script development and building the stop motion puppets and sets). To achieve the best technical and artistic knowledge and understanding of stop motion production it is recommendable to take part in both of the courses.

Animation, lighting and cinematography in Stop Motion production -course will start 7th of January in the big studio in Lemminkäisenkatu (Iso Studio LEM_B162) and will continue until the end of May.

During the course, students will learn about digital photography, image processing and the basics of post-production. During the course, students will experiment and explore the possibilities offered by digital methods in their own artistic work, as well as learn about the specific issues related to the photographing of artworks, both in terms of camera technology and lighting. During the course, students will design a portfolio and learn how to update it.

The course is divided into two parts:
In the intensive week (week 40 Tue 1 Oct - Fri 4 Oct), students will learn how to use a digital camera and lighting in repro photographing their artwork.
On Tuesdays in weeks 43-47 we focus on post-production (Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, CameraRaw and Photoshop) and the basics of layout work (InDesign).

Joint Implementation: Documentary Photography + Photographic Methods II
The courses are implemented together, with the same program applied to both.

The implementations are linked so that each student creates an independent, sequential series as part of the documentary photography project. The course also deepens skills in image editing, InDesign, and printing, while introducing the requirements that the print industry imposes on images.

The main focus is on each student’s individual artistic work within the documentary project and its sequential execution in the Photographic Methods II course.

Content

The students will focus on the content and modes of expression in contemporary sculpture. What can a three-dimensional object say about today’s society, and how? Which materials are environmentally sustainable? The studies introduce topical aspects of contemporary sculpture, such as spatial, multisensory and cross-disciplinary modes of expression as well as the relationship between a work and the audience.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. During this course, the students will design and execute a three-dimensional work of art or collection of works. In addition, the students will create a visual presentation about a contemporary sculptor of their choice as instructed by the teacher and based on source materials. The course may also include visits to exhibitions and studios, artist lectures and excursions.

Teaching methods

The learning methods emphasise task-based learning, project-based learning and face-to-face teaching. At the beginning of the course, the student defines, together with the supervising teacher, a goal for his/her/their work, which is approached through personal work, group and individual meetings and self-reflection.

Content scheduling

During the course, three-dimensional sketches will be designed and executed as part of a development plan for the Linnanniemi Arts District. The City of Turku's has commissioned the Arts Academy to design sculptural roadblocks, which it hopes will support the character of the new district. One of the sketches produced during the course will be selected for further development and production. The course "Wood as a material for sculpture" will run concurrently with this course.

The actual course is preceded by an intensive workshop (1 credit) during the workshop week and the week of independent work, aimed at gathering material and sketching out preliminary ideas. The week's programme includes exploring the topic, benchmarking different models, visiting places (documenting the places for further study) and getting to know the specific features of the area, etc. During the workshop, students will collectively carry out a background material survey and independently create a series of quick sketches of ideas (using ceramics as material).

For the actual course delivery (5 credits), students select 1-2 drafts produced in the intensive phase for further development. The selection may be supported by a discussion session with a representative of the commissioning agency to spar with the students. The sketches will be turned into a finalised 1:3 scale work proposal. The material used for the miniatures will be plaster. We will also organise a visit to a concrete foundry to make the basics and possibilities of the realisation process more concrete.

The material produced in the final part of the sketching phase will be put together into an exhibition (in the House of Arts). The exhibition will include scale models, ceramic sketches, and possibly digitally realised image prints of concrete columns in their "real" positions (as prints or on screen) and 3D modelled sketches to be tested with an AR application.

What are the ways of expression in sculpture? Answer: in every possible way! The expanding field of sculpture (Krauss) has incorporated into its body a huge range of different modes of expression, from video art to performance art. For example, spatiality, corporeality and materiality, or their opposites, are key concepts in contemporary sculpture that shape the content of the work. The place of the sculpture is in the same physical reality as its creator and its audience. In addition to the physical and material dimension, the "direction of reading" chosen by the artist also influences the making of the work. For example, the artist may wish to emphasise a feminist or even post-humanist perspective in relation to the interpretation of the work.
During the course, students will choose a concept of contemporary sculpture that interests them and produce a work or a body of work inspired by it. At the same time, they will explore the theory of their chosen concept in more depth and present their findings to the group in a "conceptual seminar".

The students learn a wide range of methods and materials used in sculpture, including recycled materials, textiles, paper, plastics, electronics, robotics etc., as well as combining different method and materials, for example soft and hard materials or cross-disciplinary art projects to create interesting content. In addition, the students learn about the history and current applications of methods and materials in sculpture as well as occupational safety in theory and practice.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. Through these exercises, the students will learn how to use different methods, materials and their combinations as part of their expression. The students are expected to actively participate in instruction and feedback discussions.

Alternative Methods of Sculpture turns attention to the fourth dimension of sculpture, time, around its three-dimensionality and (apparent) permanence. What kind of anomalies, such as video, performance or communal encounters, bring to the category of sculpture. In what way do anamorphic materials that are highly responsive to time, temperature or movement extend the concept of traditional sculpture?
Students will experiment and explore the concept of temporality in relation to their own artistic work.

The course concentrates on the creation of a collection of paintings and deepening the acquired painting skills. The students will create a series of works and display them in a space provided or that of the student’s own choice. The students will give a presentation about their painting process, analysing the relevance of the documented expression and content together with the group. Students work with the artist teacher, reflecting and discussing during studio tours and viewings. The studio tour is a pedagogical approach to visual arts in which the teacher tours the painting studio and the guiding discussion takes place at the student's workstation.

Student workload

The student will do practical work and attend weekly lectures, possible excursions and demonstrate professional working skills during the three weeks. Working hours are Tue-Fri 9am-4pm. Tuesdays are model painting days - in which case working 9am-4pm is a prerequisite for credit. On Fridays, independent work or participation in a model drawing class. During the course, students can create works using different painting techniques according to their interests and expression.

Painting Expressions is a continuation of the course Painting Expressions II. The course develops painting expression and delves deeper into the tradition of painting and the content of contemporary painting. The aim is also to develop colour perception. Students will complete a series of paintings or a set of paintings. On Tuesdays, a model painting day - working from 9 am to 4 pm is a prerequisite for the course.

The course will take place from 7.1.-24.1.2025.Students will work in the Big Painting Room (F209) and the Small Painting Room (F208), starting in the Small Painting Room on Wednesday 8.1.2025 at 9 am. At the beginning of the course everyone should have: watercolours, water cups of different sizes, watercolour brushes, at least one (grey/black) watercolour pencil, masking tape, sponge and/or spray bottle. At least 2 large sheets (approx. 50x70cm) of watercolour paper: e.g. Fabriano 300g/m2. Participation in the water-soluble methods course does not require a background in painting.

The school will provide small-sized watercolour papers for common exercises and a small amount of basic equipment. Buy the equipment and at least 2 large sheets of watercolour paper, for example from the framing shop in Itäisenkatu (Turku) or from Tempera (Helsinki).

At the beginning of the course everyone should have: at least 2 large (50x70) sheets of watercolour paper (e.g. Fabriano 300 g), watercolours, water cups of different sizes, watercolour brushes, at least one (grey/black) watercolour pencil, masking tape, sponge and/or spray bottle.

The school will provide watercolour papers for common exercises and a small amount of other basic equipment. If you do not already have watercolours, please do not buy them at Biltema or Clas Ohlsson, but for example at the frame shop on Itäisenkatu. The list of materials will be revised during the course.


Course timetable

Week 1

Start Tue 7.1. at 1 pm (13.00), Small painting class F208
Preparation for joint painting exercises - equipment, working spaces, still life. Note: bring your own simple mini-set (your still life can fit on A5 paper). The placemat will be used in the technique exercises. This is not the time to paint from a photograph. The aim is to go through the basic techniques of watercolour with quick and simple exercises.

Common painting demo: painting and sketching methods at the pace of croquis.
You will need on Tue-Wed in total: 8-10 small (max A4) watercolour papers and one larger paper. School paper or your own paper. No works but exercises but quality paper is still essential.

Start: soak 2 pieces of paper e.g. under the sink, put the papers in a plastic bag.

1. Wet to dry. First paint with plain water, then drizzle the paint over the watery areas. Apply varying degrees of wetness to each area.
2. Wet to dry, looking for a mark where you draw and paint at the same time. For example, use a large round brush with a sharp tip.
3. Dampen the paper with a spray bottle or sponge vaguely, painting on wet
4. Take the wet paper out of the plastic bag, dry the excess. Make sure the paper is evenly wet on all sides. Paint wet on wet.
5. Same as the previous one - this one takes a bit of practice!
6. Sketch with the same colour watercolour pencil as the painting (aim: the drawing line disappears)
7. An abstract colour cloud on a blank piece of larger paper
8. Portrait croquis with free style.

Tue afternoon: optional assignment: deepen, take over "melting" the watercolour pencil sketch line into the painting. Do a small painting, anticipating the color of the pencil according to the color ranges to come (pretty big goal, but try).

4 weeks, 6 tasks. Implementation according to your starting level. If it seems too easy, develop challenges. A grade of 5 can also be achieved with the easiest option. The school provides small pieces of MDF and acrylic sheet (small amount of fabric for the next course). Priming materials, a small amount of paint mediums and oil paint are also provided for students.
Primer and paint small works - e.g. 20 x 20 cm is enough for exercises. Of course, you can use your own handwriting to make a larger print (and buy MDF from Jari if necessary). Don't overdo with the subjects - the idea is to focus on developing technical skills. Colour field painting is an easy place to start if you can't think of anything to paint. You can focus on different brush strokes, enjoying your own painting craft and colour combinations. If the ideas are overflowing, that's fine too- the subjects of the paintings are up to you and the assignments do not define or limit them, nor do they affect the judging. You can also choose to paint on the same subject throughout the course: the groundwork and the way in which you do it will vary.

priming:
1. gluing and joint priming a) on canvas b) on MDF. The fabric for (a) can be e.g. gauze glued to a small MDF base or a fabric of your own choice. Or a fabric from the next lesson.
2. Any other primer of your choice for MDF, fabric or paper. E.g. plastic glue+gesso+plastic glue, semi-oil base, gelcoat+aluminium base, paper glued to canvas or board, with adhesive backing.
3. For at least one painting: hanging-ready. A piece of MDF on the back (or any other solution you can think of, instead of a million screws), holes in the acrylic board or a glued hanging hook.

painting:
4. tempera technique of your choice, mixing paint with pigment, painting on a greaseless chalk base or gelcoat-primed paper. You can use tempera as a base coat and continue with oil paint or use tempera to make a finished painting. If you choose a whitewash tempera, paint on the board.
5. Choose at least one of these: Mixed media, layering, shumraus or under primer. For mixed technique, choose one of the following: tempera emulsion (for wet oil paint), for layering Hauser, Liquin or stand oil, for shumraising e.g. Hauser, for under priming e.g. stand oil or Malla's paint fluid.
6. oil painting with Liquin, Hauser or linseed oil on acrylic sheet or metal OR another tempering technique of your choice.

Alongside these experiments, make canvas bases for Henri's course (Nov-Dec) and consider a larger oil painting on canvas. The subject is free. This work will be carried out in the next course (Expression in Painting I). The autumn painting period will end with a group exhibition and viewing at the Wall Gallery from 18.12.2024-30.1.2025 (the final date of the exhibition is still to be determined).

Oil Painting Techniques 22.10.-14.11.2024
The main focus of the course is to introduce the student to linseed oil-based painting techniques and to deepen the techniques according to the student's starting level. The use of different painting fluids will be practised and the student will explore his/her own field of painting. You will also learn tempera techniques and how to use colour pigments in a practical way. Students may choose to complete the entire course working with tempera paints. During the course, students will learn how to do traditional gluing, chalk priming and semi-oil priming on MDF and canvas. You will learn how to combine oil paint and tempera and how to apply a chalk finish, also with a view to watercolour painting. Attention will be paid to safety and ecologically sound working practices. To learn collegial skills, working with others in the same workspace.

The list of materials required for the course is given at the beginning of the course:

NOTE: The Autumn 2024 painting course does not include the building of a border frame or the tightening of the canvas - it is assumed that you have mastered these before the course starts. If you do not know how to make a border frame, you can paint on a sheet or, if possible, learn how to make a frame in the Workshop before starting the painting course. Content

During the workshop, the students will learn the qualities and behaviour of metal as a sculpting material. The workshop may be held as a separate course or its content may be linked with projects that have already been started in other sculpture workshops. Workshop-based courses require regular attendance. The workshop schedule is to be confirmed later.

Content scheduling

Students will be introduced to the basic principles of stop motion puppet and set building. During the course students will be working in small groups. These groups will function as a production teams that produces a preproduction materials ready for a short stop motion production (duration 2-4 minutes).

This course is first part of a bigger ensemble. It will start already in 16th of January and will focus on preproduction (script development and building the stop motion puppets and sets). Puppet and set building will take place in the workshop in Linnankatu from 20nd of Febryary to 17th of March.

To achieve the best technical and artistic knowledge and understanding of the stop motion technique it is recommendable to take part also in the following course that will focus on animation, lighting and cinematography of stop motion production.

Animation, lighting and cinematography in Stop Motion production -course will start 20th of March in the Big Studio in Lemminkäisenkatu (LEM_B162) and will continue until end of May.

The course introduces students to the expressive techniques and terminology of animation and the importance of rhythm and timing in the formation of movement. The work will explore the structures and relationships of movement and the behaviour of the animated mass. Animation exercises will be done both on paper and digitally. Croquis drawing is used to develop perceptual and concentration skills.

The course concentrates on black-and-white film photography and analog black-and-white printing of photographs through practical work and theory. Content scheduling

There is no substitute for the magical appearance of a black and white image on photographic paper in the darkness of the darkroom. Digital printing methods cannot beat a skillfully printed black and white print in terms of quality, durability and, especially, experience. Making a silver gelatine print is a combination of vision, creativity and skill. A successful print is a conscious interpretation of the content of the negative by the artist.

In this course you will learn how to print authentic silver gelatin prints from your own black and white film negatives in the darkroom. We will focus on producing a finished black and white print in an archival quality. During the course we will also make images on fibre paper and go through the steps of finishing the print, such as: reducing, toning and spotting.

On completion of the course, students will be able to print silver gelatin prints from black and white film negatives in an archival quality. They will be able to find the basic exposure time using test strips, control image contrast, and make local corrections through additional exposure, shading and veiling. The student will master the post-processing of a finished print: reducing, toning and spotting. Colour film will also be developed during the course, but prints will not be printed.

WORK SAFETY will be carefully reviewed and examined at the beginning of the course, mandatory! It is important to understand the risks of working with chemicals, both to yourself and the environment. We emphasize an ecological way of working.

Attendance is compulsory, especially during the first two weeks of the course.
Please bring protective clothing, a work jacket (no woollen sweater), preferably also your own chemical-resistant rubber gloves.

Students will learn about plastic modeling and mould making, as well as different casting materials such as plaster, concrete and waxes. During the course, the student will carry out various exercises and a larger independent artistic work. The content of the independent work overlaps with the technical objectives of the course and deepens the development of the student's own artistic expression and understanding of the possibilities of casting methods and perception-based modeling in contemporary sculpture. The student will actively participate in discussions, guidance and feedback on materials science, plastic moulding and casting techniques and pass the assignments.

Content scheduling

The course will approach two essential issues in sculpture - giving form and duplicating a piece. In classical art education, this has traditionally meant shaping a sculpture from visual perception in clay and casting it in a mould made from a clay model. The technical process has been driven by the need to transform fragile and malleable clay into a more durable material, usually plaster.

In the course we approach the theme from the perspective of contemporary art. The material hierarchies of classical art are still partly real, but durability or the value of the material (e.g. bronze) do not control the artistic process. Neither do the demands of visual representation and similarity. In what way is design dependent on different perceptual processes? How, for example, does perception based on tactile or verbal description produce different forms than plasticity based on the sense of sight? How do the materials influence the content of the work? The content of a piece cast in chocolate is completely different from that of a piece cast in concrete of the same shape.

The course's tutorial and theory days are usually held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please be prepared to be there from 10am to 4pm - a more detailed timetable will be published later. Wednesdays and Fridays you schedule yourself. It is up to you to ensure that the work processes proceed according to the mutually agreed timetable. Please allow at least 20h per week for artistic work.

During the workshop, the students will learn the qualities and behaviour of wood as a sculpting material. The focus areas include the tools and safety in woodwork, the theory and practice of wooden sculpture and the development of individual expression in relation to the discussed methods and materials. The workshop may be held as a separate course or its content may be linked with projects that have already been started in other sculpture workshops.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. Through these exercises, the students will learn how to use different methods, materials and their combinations as part of their expression. The students are expected to actively participate in instruction and feedback discussions.

Teaching methods

The learning methods emphasise task-based learning, project-based learning and face-to-face teaching. At the beginning of the course, the student defines, together with the supervising teacher, a goal for his/her/their work, which is approached through personal work, group and individual meetings and self-reflection.

Wood as a material for sculpture is, as its name suggests, a material-based course. Wood as a material surrounds us in the form of buildings, furniture, objects of necessity and sometimes also art objects. Ikea's chipboard cabinets are made of wood, as are the Baroque cabinets that have been declared of cultural and historical value. Trees grow in forests, sometimes even through the asphalt on the sunny side of the pavement, and branches and leaves fall to the ground. Trees have a life cycle and research shows that they are also capable of communicating with each other (see The secret life of trees). Students will critically reflect on the relationship of the material to their work plan and their chosen working methods. How the nature of the material is revealed in the student's work and how it relates to debates in the field of contemporary art. Students will produce their own independent work or process exploring the qualities of the material within the given constraints.

How can we define the present? Does it always take place in relation to the past and the future? Does the present (NOW) even exist? What possibilities do we have to speculatively imagine what is to come?
The course will explore how creative world-making practices such as visual art and speculative literature, new technologies, feminist theory, etc., as perspectives and tools, can create or anticipate strange new forms of existence and temporalities, challenging our understanding of the past and opening up unexpected and potentially more promising futures.
The course aims to emphasize the need to structure experiences as fiction in order to understand them. By creating speculative systems or worlds through artistic work, our relationship with materials, objects, words and living and non-living beings will be explored.

The course will cover topics such as:

- The means of (speculative) fiction in art and art text
- Worlds within worlds
- New temporalities (times and spaces)
- New technologies, Artificial Intelligence, AR, VR, etc.
- Trying to pay attention to the overlooked, including non-human beings and matter
- The interconnection between the digital world and natural systems

On this course, the students will expand their competence in a selected method. The course introduces Printmaking in the field of Contemporary Art using topical techniques and methods. The course will be integrated with Printmaking as Expression II.

The course is integrated with the Photographic Methods III course. During the course, students develop and reflect on their own expression through practical work. The focus of learning is on the promotion of the student's own artistic work.

Objective

The students will be able to

• apply the basic concepts of printing techniques and take the limitations of printing technologies into account in their own work.

Content

On this course, the students will develop and discuss their own expression through practical work. The students will also apply advanced image processing and the basics of graphic design and printing technology. During the course, the students will learn about the requirements of the printing industry in term of image production and practise accurate digital printing. They will also learn about different printing materials and their features.

International connections

The course is based on the student’s own artistic work, assignments, reading the material distributed during lectures, and feedback on the development of the documentary project. At the end of the course, a review of the students' work will be organized. Attendance is mandatory for the entire course, and assessment is specific to each professional subject

Joint Implementation: Documentary Photography + Photographic Methods II
The courses are implemented together, with the same program applied to both.

The implementations are linked so that each student creates an independent, sequential series as part of the documentary photography project. The course also deepens skills in image editing, InDesign, and printing, while introducing the requirements that the print industry imposes on images.

The main focus is on each student’s individual artistic work within the documentary project and its sequential execution in the Photographic Methods II course.

The students learn to identify the expressive potential of different photographic methods and techniques and to use them in their own work.

Content

• The production methods in photography, different formats of productions. New expressive channels using different tools. How will these affect the interpretation of an image?
• Methods of displaying photographic art. Photographs in mobile devices, installations, virtual spaces etc. without forgetting the traditional prints. What is the relationship between different presentation methods and the reality and what impact does this have on a photograph.

Making and presenting a finished photographic work. Face-to-face meetings, lectures and discussions. Group work to organise an exhibition. Introduction to PeriLAB. Possible self-funded excursion to Helsinki: visit to art schools and community work spaces, exhibition visit.

Students will continue to work independently throughout the course and will produce and present a finished photographic work in a group exhibition.
The introductory meeting will provide an introduction to the exhibition process in general and explore possible exhibition venues.
The preparation of a photographic file for printing and the PeriLab introduction are a compulsory part of the course.

Content scheduling

The course is integrated with the course Photographic Expression I. The aim of the course is to produce a finished photographic work. We will work together as a group and independently. The final outcome of the course will be a small group exhibition of the finished works produced during the course, either in the school gallery or in another space to be acquired together.
An introduction to PeriLAB will take place during the course. After the orientation, the student will be entitled to use the services of PeriLAB. In addition to the introductory lecture and exhibition, the student must attend the PeriLAB orientation.

Content

The course introduces the technical basis of photography through theory and various short exercises. The emphasis is on an experimental and exploratory approach to artistic work - the observation and mastery of photographic phenomena, through which the student develops a strong understanding of photographic techniques.

During the course, a strong understanding of photography is developed through theory and experimental work. We use digital cameras and also consider issues related to digital workflows and printing from the perspective of sustainable development. The artistic part of Bachelor’s thesis is demanding both in terms of scope and artistic content, as it shall consist of an independently and methodically executed work or series of works. The thesis work may be an action, exhibition, book or other similar production of visual art.

- identify the possibilities of manipulating the temporal continuum as part of the post-production process
- the basics of compositing
- understand the production planning and workflow for post-production in both 2D animation and stop motion animation.

This course will take place in weeks 16-17, using raw footage of puppet animation productions shot earlier in the spring.
You can also volunteer to take part in the editing part of the post-production 2 realization of the film in week 12.
