Objective
Students will 
•	Understand the treatment path for perioperative patients and know how to describe the perioperative 
treatment process of a perioperative patient 
•	Learn the principles of asepsis and know how to apply the methods and principles of infection prevention in a surgical ward 
•	Be able to work as a part of a multiprofessional surgical and anaesthetic team at the different phases of perioperative nursing and know the essential factors that contribute to successful team work  
•	Become proficient in the basic principles and values of surgical and anaesthetic nursing and learn to base their actions on the latest research information 
•	Understand the special features of pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy for perioperative patients and know how to apply them in patient care 
•	Become familiar with the most common anaesthetic and analgesic methods 
•	Know how to prepare patients for anaesthesia and an operation 
•	Know how to use common patient testing, examination, monitoring and care instruments, analyse the resulting information and act accordingly 
•	The students will know how to report on and document the different phases of perioperative treatment 
•	Learn to identify the special features of counselling and support provided to perioperative patients 
•	Be aware of the safety risks in surgical and anaesthetic wards and know how to ensure the safety of activities 
•	Understand the tasks of anaesthetic nurses, circulating nurses and practise them  
•	Learn to perform nursing of surgical patients in a surgical ward 
•	Learn to observe and care for patients in the intraoperative and in the recovery room

Contents 
•	Perioperative nursing (organization, tasks and areas of responsibility in team work, care environment) 
•	Ethical principles of surgical wards 
•	Patient and occupational safety in a surgical ward (including infection prevention, asepsis, levels of disinfection, instrument safety, reporting and documentation, use of checklists)  
•	Disinfection and sterilization methods in perioperative nursing 
•	Aseptic techniques of surgical wards 
•	Preoperative and intraoperative preparations in surgical and anaesthetic wards and transferring the patient to an operating room 
•	Care of a patient during a procedure: different roles and duties of a nurse and team work 
•	Maintaining the body temperature of a surgical patient 
•	Common treatment equipment, instruments and sutures and assisting in a surgery 
•	Roles and tasks of surgical teams and preparations of a surgical team before a procedure (instrument and supply collection, surgical hand disinfection, sterile clothing, preparing an operating position, disinfection of the area of operation and defining the area of operation) 
•	Common methods of anaesthesia , the medications used in them and the 
effects and phases of these medications in the body 
•	Preparations for anaesthesia (collecting the medications, preparing the patient monitoring systems 
and the anaesthesia workstation) 
•	Observation and care of patients under anaesthesia in the operating and recovery rooms 
•	Tasks related to ending a procedure (supply inventory and equipment maintenance) 
•	Pharmacotherapy and liquid therapy during anaesthesia and in the recovery room  
•	Transferring the patient to a recovery room, monitoring and treatment there and the criteria of transferring the patient to an inpatient ward
