Graduates of the study programme have the ability to work in the library's various customer service, metadata, information service and guidance tasks. The emphasize is on the importance of the library as a promoter of literacy, equality and inclusion. The business studies included in the study programme provide the ability to work in library management positions as well.

In study programme, it is possible to study at least 60 credits of library studies, which is a standard requirement for recruiting library jobs in Finland.

Development

At the beginning of the studies, the basics of business, the communication and language skills required in the field, as well as the skills required for network activities, are introduced. As the studies progress, the professional studies of the library and information service are deepened, as well as work community competence, international competence and research, development and innovation competence.

The degree includes internships as well as elective studies. The aim of these is to support and supplement the student's own personal study plan and professional orientation. The thesis also deepens the student's professional orientation.

Studying is a multidisciplinary study, including contact periods, online study and independent study. E-learning includes e.g. online lectures and group meetings online. The first academic year is studied online, except for the start orientation and the end event of the academic year. From the second academic year onwards, the studies are mainly carried out as a blended studies implementation. During one academic year, teaching is organized during the day 2-4 working days a month.

Study takes place at both the individual and small group level, where teamwork skills are emphasized. Teachers act as learning facilitators who support the student’s learning process throughout their studies.

Further information

The evaluation focuses on know-how and its development. The evaluation methods and criteria are widely used as well as different perspectives. In addition to the assessment made by the teacher, peer review, self-assessment or evaluation by the client can be used. One objective of the assessment is that students learn to evaluate their own skills and develop their work.

Evaluation can be done in many different ways and can be based on, for example, exams, assignments and extensive learning tasks or projects. The evaluation criteria for each course are described in general terms in the study guide and in more detail in the course implementation plan.

The grade of the study units is reported as 0-5 or accepted / rejected. In addition, the student or student group often receives oral or written feedback that will help students acknowledge their own strengths and development goals.
