Objective

You will learn English language and terminology used in various engineering fields that are studied at Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland. You will also improve your English skills further (writing, speaking, reading and communication skills).

Content

The course focuses on improving the language skills required for studying engineering at higher education institutions in Finland. The course will include field-specific language focusing also on communication skills and information retrieval. The course will consist of independent study, groupwork and online meetings with the teachers.

Student workload

The course consists of 12 weeks of studies. Each week has both online meetings as well as independent materials to be studied and tasks to do in Moodle. In order to get the most out of the course, both online meetings and independent materials need to be studied - just taking part in the online meetings or just studying the materials will not give you the skills the course aims at.

Content scheduling

The English language requirement for university of applied sciences students in Finland is level B2. This course focuses on the language skills expected of university of applied sciences students: how to study in interactive language education, working in a group, finding reliable information, as well as reading and writing academic texts on a basic level.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment is based on tasks that the student must complete in order to pass the course. In addition to this, participation in online meetings is also assessed.

This course has 8 learning tasks that are designed to support your learning process and help you achieve the learning outcomes of this course. The learning tasks are assessed as follows:

1. Meeting task (20p)

2. Academic research paper (20p)

3. Cultural communication (20p)

4. Presence min. 60%(30p)

Total points 100 (the final grade is based on the number of points from the above-listed tasks and the minimum number of points needed to pass the course is 40.)

Successful passing of the course requires completing all learning tasks with passing grades and being present in at least 60% of the online meetings.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

The student has not achieved the course objectives. They are able to identify and use only a few course subject area’s concepts and cannot apply their knowledge.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. They are able to identify and use the course subject area’s concepts and understand the conditions of knowledge and skills development.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement in some areas. They are able to use the course concepts well and to apply their knowledge in study and work situations. The student is able to analyse their own knowledge and skills.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course very well. They know the course subject area’s concepts well and are able to make justified and fluent analysis on course subject area. The student is well prepared to apply their knowledge and skills in study and work situations. They are able to analyse the competencies of the study field and the development of their own knowledge and skills.
