Objective

The participants are able to describe the purpose of packing and the role of the package in the logistics.

They can also describe the role of packaging in consumer behavior and brand building.

Furthermore, the participants are able to consider material efficiency and recycling aspects in package design and are able to choose a sustainable packaging material for an application.

Content

The Sustainable Packaging course focus on designing ecologically and economically sustainable packaging.

The participants familiarize to the different functions of a packaging as a protecting necessity, as an information and brand building media and as a logistical unit.

The participants learn about different packaging materials, their ecological footprint and recyclability.

They also learn about packaging designfrom marketing and functionality point of views. In the course, a packaging will be conceived and designed for a chosen product.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Student is able to name differences between different packaging materials and their functionality. Student is able to name the main reasons for using packages. Student is able to name principles of usability and find them in packaging design. Student can recognize the features of sustainable packaging.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Student can explain the differences between different packaging materials and their functionality. Student can explain the main reasons for using packages . Student is able to apply usability and sustainability principles in packaging design. Student recognize the viewpoints of concept and service design in packaging design.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student is able to apply different packaging material and their functionality and is able to give well defined arguments based on material efficiency and sustainability for his/her selections.Student is able to apply the methods of user-centered and concept design in designing a functional sustainable package. Student is able to explain the meaning and features of packaging in the context of service design and sustainability.

The grade consist of:
• Group assignments, 50%
• Design process; poster, prototype and final pitching, 50%
• Self and peer evaluation, +/- grade
• Active participation is required through all the course
