Content scheduling

The course will take place during 10.01.2022 - 13.02.2022.

Four online study sessions will be organized:

10.1.2022 at 9-10 Introduction
24.1.2022 at 9-10 Essay help session (voluntary)
31.1.2022 at 12-14 Calculation task
3.2.2022 at 12-14 Calculation task help session (voluntary)

In this course student familiarizes themselves with the waste management as a part of circular economy and the essential concepts of waste management, recycling and the other ways to use waste as a resource. The main goal is to understand the big picture of topics relating to waste management and waste treatment.

Course topics are: 1. Waste management as a part of circular economy 2. Waste hierarchy 3. Waste amounts and waste fractions 4. Waste prevention and re-use 5. Recycling and material utilization 6. Waste-to-energy 7.Final disposal of waste.

Objective

Student:
1. Understands the principles of resource efficiency and waste hierarchy
2. Understands the most commonly used waste treatment techniques
3. Practice work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team
4. Practice to act independently using external networks and resources to manage a work successfully

Content

In this first part you'll familiarize yourself with the waste management as a part of circular economy and the essential concepts of waste management, recycling and the other ways to use waste as a resource. The main goal is to understand the big picture of topics relating to waste management and waste treatment.

Materials

On Itslearning platform.

Material includes articles, guidebooks, strategies and real-life examples from EU, waste management organizations, researchers and companies.

Teaching methods

Activating tasks on online platform, studies on waste management.

Student poorly understands the principles of resource efficiency and waste hierarchy and commonly used waste treatment techniques. The student has shortcomings in their independent work management and use of external networks and resources.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Student understands the principles of resource efficiency and waste hierarchy and commonly used waste treatment techniques. Student practices to act independently using external networks and resources to manage a work successfully.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Student excellently understands the principles of resource efficiency and waste hierarchy and commonly used waste treatment techniques. Student acts independently using external networks and resources to manage a work excellently.
