Content scheduling

Welcome to the Darkroom

Course starts on Tuesday 25.10. at 10 in the darkroom.

We work with analog photography, film camera, chemistry. In the darkroom the student learns to develop own films and photographs.

Safety working principles is obligatory to understand both ecological and individual health risks.
No contact lenses allowed.
If pregnant we recommend not to participate.

During the course each student develop own films and photographs,it is obligatory to be present at least 2 first weeks when teacher is around. Only after good basic skills are achieved its possible to work even evenings individually or in small groups.

We have weekly group meetings and discuss photographs developed and its obligatory to participate.

Timetable usually Tues - Thu.

Objective

The students will be able to
• apply the basic concepts and materials of black and white photography
• develop a black and white film.
• produce high quality black and white prints in darkroom
• identify the expressive potential of black and white photography and to use it in their own work.
• apply the principles and methods of safe ways of working.
• The students will be aware of the health and environmental risks related to darkroom work and adopt safe methods of working and principles of sustainable development.

Content

On this course, the students will focus on black and white analogue photography and the printing of black and white photographs in theory and practice. During the course, the students will discuss the expressive potential of black and white photography and apply this knowledge in their own expression.

Materials

Working safety with chemicals, a lecture.
Group discussions.
Photo books, library and exhibition visits.

Teaching methods

Learning by doing and by seeing other students working results and development. We discuss both in groups and individually.
Exhibition visits when possible.

Student works with own photographs, new photo series photographed and developed during the course.
Active participation during the course is essential.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Active participation.
The student can work independently in the analog darkroom and can develop film and make own b/w photographs.
