Objective

The students will be able to:
• apply historical and modern techniques and modes of expression in sculpture.
• use different methods of sculpture and develop their own three-dimensional expression from a wide and innovative perspective
• work while observing occupational safety and environmental considerations
• plan and scale their work for the time frame allowed
• work as an active member of a group while developing its work

Content

The students learn a wide range of methods and materials used in sculpture, including recycled materials, textiles, paper, plastics, electronics, robotics etc., as well as combining different method and materials, for example soft and hard materials or cross-disciplinary art projects to create interesting content. In addition, the students learn about the history and current applications of methods and materials in sculpture as well as occupational safety in theory and practice.
The studies are completed according to the plan at workshops. Through these exercises, the students will learn how to use different methods, materials and their combinations as part of their expression. The students are expected to actively participate in instruction and feedback discussions.

Teaching methods

The learning methods emphasise task-based learning, project-based learning and face-to-face teaching. At the beginning of the course, the student defines, together with the supervising teacher, a goal for his/her/them work, which is approached through personal work, group and individual meetings and self-reflection.

Content scheduling

Alternative Methods of Sculpture turns attention to the fourth dimension of sculpture, time, around its three-dimensionality and (apparent) permanence. What kind of anomalies, such as video, performance or communal encounters, bring to the category of sculpture. In what way do anamorphic materials that are highly responsive to time, temperature or movement extend the concept of traditional sculpture?
Students will experiment and explore the concept of temporality in relation to their own artistic work. The basis for the temporality of sculpture will be explored through a study of ceramic work, the most historic formative technique in history.

The group meets together every Tuesday at 10:00, other dates to be confirmed.

Further information

The ceramic work includes a material fee which is the responsibility of the student.

Assessment methods and criteria

The learning task forms the basis of the assessment, which focuses on the appropriate scale of the work, control of the work process and artistic expression. All assignments given during the course must be completed and will contribute to the assessment. At the end of the course, there will be an individual assessment discussion, either common to all or alternatively between the student and the teacher. Self-assessment, peer and teacher assessment will be emphasised in the assessment discussion.

Student
- can apply the given instructions to their own work
- can use key professional concepts and tools and apply them to their own expression

In addition to the above, the student
- can plan their own work and identify the stages of their working process
- be able to estimate and measure the time required to complete the study/work
- work and act in accordance with ethical and ecological principles
- be able to develop and deepen their personal expression
- can place their work in a broader context and in the field of contemporary art

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the critical intersection of their chosen materials, working methods and content with contemporary art discourses
- be able to analyse and develop the stages of their working process
- be able to critically analyse different approaches to problem-solving
