Objective
The student knows the basics of soils and can determine the type of soil. He/she knows the Finnish bedrock formation, the most common rocks and minerals. The student knows the most important factors and phenomena related to the design of earthworks, such as load capacity, frost-susceptibleness, settlement and subsidence. The student is familiar with the drilling methods and laboratory tests needed for determining dimensional parameters. The student is able to assess from the results factors such as, the variety of soil types, frost-susceptibleness, settlings and load capacity features. Students are familiar with the various ways of foundations and things that influence the choice. The student knows excavation bracing work and design engineering. The student is able to use design tables for the preliminary sizing. The student knows the standards, regulations and guidelines for foundation engineering.Students are able to draw up an initial work plan to remedy wooden structures. The student knows the materials and products used in the repair of structures.
