Content scheduling
After completing the course, the student:
- Knows the operating principles of the most important HVAC systems and is able to perform basic sizing
- Able to perform the design of simple HVAC systems
- Knows the laws, regulations and instructions that guide design.
The course covers the operation of the most important building services systems. After completing the course, the student knows the goals and basics of the use, dimensioning and supervision of building services systems.
Objective
After completing the course student
- knows the requirements and applications of building services engineering
- knows and understands different types of energy use
- can identify different energy utilization systems
- can identify the pros and cons of different energy utilization and distribution systems in buildings
Materials

Teaching methods
Lectures
Group work for the whole group. Excel work.
Application of regulations, recommendations and instructions guiding construction with Excel.
Exam schedules
Exam on the last reserved study session.
The student can see the exam date during the lesson in the rotating schedule (paper), and through the class schedule machine with the course ID. The implementation dates are also visible in the student's calendar.
According to the instructions of Turku University of Applied Sciences, a failed exam can be retaken MAX twice:
Retake 1: 20.01.2026 at 16:00-18:00
Retake 2: 03.02.2026 at 16:00-18:00
Exam length 90 min
Additional instructions for retakes on the ITS platform
If the group work is successful, the simulation of the energy demand of the building can be carried out as an exam for the last time or alternatively the exam can be replaced by personal simulation work.

Teamwork
Excel working
The course focuses on sustainable development by familiarizing students with the characteristics of existing and new building stock and their ability and limitations to operate more energy efficiently. Students improve their ability to assess the significance of changes in terms of energy efficiency, both for the building as a whole and for parts, both relatively and absolutely.
Completion alternatives
Evaluated separately according to proposals, at the student's initiative, according to the Turku University of Applied Sciences' assessment guidelines.
The performance should show an increase in competence related to the energy efficiency of buildings.
Passing a course with similar content at another university with numerical assessment would be considered.
Student workload
Student workload according to the credit guidelines
5 credits = approx. 135 hours of student work

Activity
Teamwork and its success play a very important role in the implementation of the course
Failed (0)
Exam less than 40% of points
Possible assignment without return
Mandatory tasks not returned
The absence of one area in the course affects everyone's material so late returned materials / teamwork sections are not eligible.
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)
40% of the possible exam
Teamwork share restored, low usability
Exercises done adequately, but mostly correct
Coping with the simulation task with acceptable criteria.
1) 35% < Points < 48%
2) 48% < Points < 61%
Assessment criteria, good (3-4)
To receive a grade, the criteria for assigning lower grades must also be met
Possible exercises that have been returned as mandatory
Mandatory assignments have been returned
3) 61% < Points < 74%
4) 74% < Points < 87%
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
Excellent performance
- Possible exam
- Simulation Assignment
- Teamwork timely restored excellent usability where possible.
Active collaboration
5) 87% < Points
Further information
Communication in the course is mainly through lessons,
In addition, the ITS -Learning platform is used, where the most important and relevant events during the course are also published.
