Objective

Having completed the course, the student:
- is familiar with the basic concepts of systems thinking and systems analysis relevant to sustainability issues
- understands why systems thinking is needed to comprehend the various forms of global challenges and their implications in eco-social systems
- can make reflective use of models to ask and test questions about the structures and dynamics of systems
- recognizes the potential for systems thinking as a form of expertise to contribute to one's work and develop one's capabilities for interdisciplinary collaboration
- understands the opportunities for intentional systems change and one's own agency

Content

This course consists of three main themes:

Theme 1: “Introduction to Systems Thinking” looks at what systems are and different ways in which they can be described.

Theme 2: “The Earth System” delves into the concept of Earth System Science and the ways in which changes in the environment are affecting the planetary system of interconnected spheres (atmosphere, biosphere, etc.).

Theme 3: “Eco-Social Systems” focuses on humans as agents of change in systems that link individuals and groups of people with the environments they inhabit and depend upon at various scales.
