Objectives
Student 
•	understands the child's status and rights as a patient and in society and is familiar with the principles that guide the treatment of children.
•	is familiar with the special features of the growth and development of children of different ages.
•	knows the basic care of children of different ages and the clinical examination of children and young people as well as the care (resuscitation) of a suddenly ill child.
•	learns how to guide children and families in different health-related matters using diverse evidence-based future guidance methods, such as different digital services and applications.  
•	understands the significance of being family-centred and is able to apply it in practical nursing.
•	is familiar with the most common illnesses in children and their treatment. 
•	knows how to perform the most common examinations and procedures on children and how to prepare for them.
•	is familiar with the pharmacological basics of pharmacotherapy for children and the safe implementation of medication and fluid therapy for children and young people.
•	knows how to assess children's pain and how to treat pain with and without medication. 
•	understands the principle of continuity of care and is able to record treatment in the patient information system according to the nursing process.
•	is able to support the functional capacity and inclusion of persons with intellectual disabilities and persons with disabilities. 
•	knows the main causes and associated diseases leading to intellectual disability. 
•	knows the special features of nursing for persons with intellectual disabilities and persons with disabilities at different stages of life. 
•	Understands the status and rights of a person with intellectual disabilities in the Finnish society and health care system.
•	Knows how to support a person with intellectual disabilities, and their family and relatives, during their life span.
•	Understands the importance of multiculturalism and can take into account the multicultural patient and their family in nursing care.
•	practises their digital competence related to nursing children, young people and the family. 
In simulation 
•	advances clients' competence in sexual health and nursing of children, families and persons with disabilities. 
•	gains experience in working with multicultural customers.

Contents
•	Laws and decrees on children and persons with intellectual disabilities, rights and ethical principles of nursing
•	Different forms and methods of family care 
•	Monitoring the growth and development of a healthy child and young person and delays/deviations in development
•	The most common paediatric diseases in children and young people, surgical problems, infectious diseases and long-term illnesses and their treatment, rehabilitation and recording in accordance with the nursing process 
•	Clinical examination of a paediatric patient and the use of different assessment methods to support treatment-related decision-making 
•	Preparing the child for the procedure, different guidance and teaching methods and the use of play in treatment situations
•	Assessment of the child's pain and pain management as well as the child's resuscitation
•	Pharmacology of children and young people, planning, implementation and evaluation of pharmacotherapy and infusion treatment 
•	Practising clinical skills related to nursing of children and young people
•	Digital services in the nursing of children, young people and families 
During the simulations: 
·	you practise the nursing of children, families and multicultural clients. 
·	you gain experience in encountering, engaging and guiding multicultural clients.
