Objective

Objectives
• Gain further proficiency in determining the need for, planning, administering and evaluating specialized, demanding emergency care
• Understand the systematic examination of patients (ABCDE), know how to assess, under supervision, the patient’s general condition, make a preliminary diagnosis, and plan the treatment and location for further treatment
• Learn to support and provide guidance to patients and their family members
• Deepen their ability to interact professionally and engage in a care relationship with people of different ages and from different cultural backgrounds
• Learn to make decisions requiring emergency care expertise in cooperation with the patient and other professional groups, as well as to support the patient’s resources to promote the patient’s health
• Master the CRM principles and know how to follow it in emergency care teams
• Understand the ethics and fundamental values of emergency care and base their actions on current knowledge
• Deepen their pharmacotherapy competence in different fields of emergency care (medication passport)
• Master the systematic and appropriate documentation and reporting of patient information (ISBAR) in different contexts
• Learn to communicate with emergency care personnel and other professionals (incl. VIRVE communication)
• Deepen their competence in infection prevention and in compliance with aseptic principles

Content

Contents:
• Determining the need for, planning, administering and evaluating specialized, demanding emergency care
• Systematical examination of patients (ABCDE), making a preliminary diagnosis
• Support and guidance to patients and their family members
• Professional interaction in a care relationship with people of different ages and from different cultural backgrounds.
• Decisions requiring emergency care expertise in cooperation with the patient and other professional groups, support the patient’s resources to promote their health
• Overall assessment of situation, making a preliminary diagnosis and planning the care needed by the patient and place of further treatment
• Principles of CRM and their implementation in emergency care
• Ethics of emergency care and its fundamental values and actions based on up-to-date information
• Pharmacotherapy competence in different fields of emergency care (medication passport)
• Documentation and reporting of patient information (ISBAR) in different contexts
• Communication with emergency care personnel and other professionals (incl. VIRVE communication)
• Infection prevention and using aseptic techniques

Teaching methods

Practical training in working life: emergency medical services
In-person teaching, workplace instructor
Independent study and search for evidence-based information

Pedagogic approaches and sustainable development

Electronic learning platform, SunHarkka.application. The student document their learning objectives in SunHarkka, the instructor and teacher approve the objectives. Mid-evaluation with the workplace instructor. Final evaluation is documented in SunHarkka, along with the student’s self-assessment for the period. The teacher approves the period once the evaluation is approved by the instructor and all practice hours are completed.

Sustainable development:
- Economic activity: electronic materials.
- The student practices their skills during the period in accordance with the sustainable development goals and evaluates their actions, for example regarding environmental impacts.

Completion alternatives

Compensation for absences must be agreed separately with the supervising teacher. If possible, the compensation will be taken during the period or the training period will be extended by the agreed number of hours to be compensated. If this is not possible, the training period hours will be made up at another time, at another place (to be agreed separately).

Student workload

1 credit = 27 hoursPractice hours 216 hours

CV + training + feedback session = 6 hours
Independent study related to the topic = 10 hours

100% attendance, sick leave, etc. must be compensated (to be agreed upon separately with the instructor and supervising teacher).

Evaluation methods and criteria

Training assessment criteria /special criteria for internship, can be found in Messi and SunHarkka. The student must be familiar with the evaluation criteria before the start of the internship and the criteria will be discussed during the internship orientation.

Further information

The SunHarkka application serves as a communication channel between the student, the supervisor, and the teacher. The student is responsible for updating SunHarkka and ensuring the information is current, for example, regarding their supervising teacher(s).
