Content scheduling

The on-campus contact teaching sessions of the 2025 study course will be held on the following dates:

• January 20, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• March 26, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Otherwise, the implementation is based on learning assignments completed during the course.

The main contents of the study course are:

• Concepts and practices of competence management.
• Identifying and anticipating competence needs.
• Developing and maintaining competence capital.
• Future competence needs in the social and health care sector.

Objective

After competing the course, the student:
- understands the concepts and practices of competence management
- recognizes and anticipates future competence needs in social and healthcare

Teaching methods

Campus-based teaching, group assignments, study assignments and an individual written assignment. This course cannot be completed entirely independently without attending in-person instruction day on campus at least once.

Pedagogic approaches and sustainable development

Students study alongside their work, using problem-based learning and applying theory to practice. This study course includes in-person instruction, small group work, and independent study.

Campus-based teaching focuses on the key theories of the study course, with discussions and experience sharing on the topics covered.

Group assignments emphasizes self-direction, peer learning, and dialogic interaction. Individual assignments involve engaging with the course literature, practicing information retrieval and refinement, and presenting structured arguments.

A sustainable future requires change-makers. Therefore, in addition to developing professional expertise, the studies strengthen students’ innovation competences, self-awareness, curiosity, ethical capabilities, leadership, empathy, and sense of responsibility. By fostering such generic skills through learning design and pedagogical methods, this course also promotes the realization of sustainable development.

Completion alternatives

No separate optional completion methods are available for the course instruction or assignments. Campus-based teaching day may be missed once with prior notice. Any additional absence must be compensated with an equivalent supplementary study assignment, which the teacher will announce after each on-campus learning day.

If you consider that you already possess competencies that meet the learning outcomes of this course and can provide evidence of such competence, you may complete the course through the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (AHOT) procedure. You must contact the course instructor no later than one week before the course begins to discuss the possibility of applying for AHOT.

If you have previously completed an equivalent course at another higher education institution, you should submit a credit transfer application through the Peppi student information system and address it to the degree programme coordinator.

Student workload

Campus-based teaching: lectures and hands-on activities (16 hours) and independent study: study assignments an individual written assignment. (119 hours). Total: 135 hours (5 ECTS credits). They are carried out in accordance with the degree regulations.

Evaluation methods and criteria

Assessment focuses on learning tasks completed during the study course, the written exam, and active participation in the activities during campus-based teaching.

By enrolling in the course, you agree to comply with the current rules on cheating on study tasks and plagiarism as well as the guidelines provided on the use of artificial intelligence of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The possible use of artificial intelligence varies by learning task. Guidance on its use is provided for each task during the course.

Failed (0)

Has not completed all tasks, has failed on an individual written assignment, have not participated in the second campus-based teaching day, or completed compensatory study assignments. Submitted tasks do not address the majority of the requirements specified in the assignment instructions.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Has completed all tasks and participated in campus-based teaching. Demonstrates a general understanding of the course content in the learning tasks and the individual written assignment.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Has completed all tasks on time and actively participated in campus-based teaching. Demonstrates a good understanding of the course content in the learning tasks and the individual written assignment.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Has completed all tasks on time and actively participated in campus-based teaching. Demonstrates comprehensive mastery and application of the course content in the learning tasks and the individual written assignment.
