Descriptions

The education is targeted for practicing engineers who have a B.Eng. degree in a field, which is related to the industries in Marine Technology. The education is workplace-oriented and the aim is to provide additional qualifications for demanding managerial and specialist positions in the Marine Technology business. A B.Eng degree in Naval Architecture or in Marine Technology is an asset but not a requirement for admission or for completion of the degree. The education is designed to support the participant´s daily occupation. The learning tasks, as well as the Master’s thesis are designed to allow the development of the employer organization's activities, benefiting both parties.

This thesis is carried out as a development project, with a clear approach to research and the close connection with practical work. If the student does not get the actual workplace development task according to the needs of training, or he does not have an employment relationship, the University RDI projects provide natural contacts with working life projects.

Internationalization
Working students have very limited opportunities for international studies. However, they can complete international studies through exchange programmes. Approximately half of the courses are offered in English. The publications used as material and sources are international. The working groups often include many people who travel a lot for work and add their individual experience to the group’s expertise.

Career opportunities
The programme prepares students for expert, supervision and management positions in design, production and sales organisations as well as for administrative duties in the public sector. The programme further offers a solid foundation for students planning a new career. The studies can offer interesting perspectives for students wishing to, for example, transfer from experts to supervisors, from a design or a production unit to a sales or marketing unit or from traditional machinery manufacture to marine engineering.

Possible jobtitles after graduation
Design engineer, production engineer, supervisor, marketing manager, product manager, production manager, quality manager, product development manager and different specialist tasks.

Postgraduate study opportunities
After completing a Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences, students can pursue researcher education at a university (Licentiate or doctoral degree). However, the target faculty is always entitled to impose its own admissions criteria and may require supplementary studies. Supplementary studies are intended to ensure that the student’s initial knowledge is specifically suitable for scientific research.

Objective

Advanced Studies 30 ECTS credits, and the thesis 30 credits

Education of Marine Technology is carried out as part of the Master of Engineering Programmes in Turku University of Applied Sciences. The studies consist of methodological and business studies as well as advanced professional studies in Marine technology (30 credits), and the thesis work (30 credits). The nominally two-year education is planned for students who have full time occupations. The teaching methods are flexible and they stress the responsibility of the students and their employers in learning. Two mandatory week-day attendances per month are set in curriculum, otherwise the timing is rather flexible. The study methods emphasize teamwork of the students. All students prepare individual study plans, which are closely linked to their profession and thesis work.

Development

The studies are realised as multiform learning, and there are primarily two days of contact teaching per month. The studies have been planned to be conducted alongside work, and their duration is about 1,5 years, but flexible solutions also support faster completion. In the early stages of studying, the student drafts a personal ISP and a thesis realisation plan.

Further information

The assessment methods vary according to the objectives of the courses. Assessment may focus on the outcome (e.g. a report or a seminar presentation), on the process (the student’s activity and performance during the course) or on both. Students receive regular feedback on their performance from their teachers. Peer- and self-assessment as well as commissioner feedback on performance are also utilized. Assessment is based on the degree assessment framework.

The programme will be developed according to the principles of continuous improvement. In the development work, feedback from the students and working life as well as their initiatives have a key role. Feedback is collected with, for instance, student questionnaires and group-specific development discussions.
