Programme description

The programme is designed to expand, enhance and develop the competence of students who hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree and have several years of professional experience. Applicants to the programme must have at least three (3) years of work experience in the field of technical engineering. The degree programme provides students with the skills needed for the profitable development of professional performance as well as the use of research findings in product and operational development. Students can extensively influence the content of their degree and the resulting expertise through their own choices. The studies are divided into professional modules comprising ten (10) ECTS credits. Students can increase their competence in the areas of management and business economy, which are were not covered in depth in the Bachelor of Engineering studies. At the beginning of the studies, students prepare an individual study plan (ISP) for acquiring knowledge and skills to support their intended career development and the employer’s needs.

In the fields of construction and environmental technology, students can primarily enhance their expertise in Finnish. The technology sales and marine engineering modules are mainly taught in English.

Working students have very limited opportunities for international studies. However, they can complete international studies through exchange programmes. Approximately half of the courses are offered in English. The publications used as material and sources are international. The working groups often include many people who travel a lot for work and add their individual experience to the group’s expertise.


Competence objectives

The scope of the advanced studies is 30 ECTS credit. A introductory course on research methods is open to all students, because an understanding of research methods is a prerequisite for utilizing research findings in development work. The studies also include optional business economy and management courses. Students can select the following professional modules comprising ten (10) ECTS credits.

· Marine Industry Cluster, in English
· Technical Sales, in English
· Construction, in Finnish
· Environmental Technology (in Finnish)

Students can select marine engineering studies from all three marine modules. The modules organized each year are selected on the basis of the student’s interest, as declared in an advance assignment. For this reason, some modules may not be organized every year. Choosing a main subject:
Choosing the main subject starts already in the application phase. In the preliminary task of the application, student chooses the main subject and the professional module. The professional modules where are enough choosen applicants will be started. When getting the information about the study place, the students are informed which professional modules will start.

Pedagogic approaches

The scope of the degree is 60 ECTS credits, including advanced studies (30 ECTS) in the form of courses or project assignments and a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS credits).

The planned length of the studies is two (2) years and the studies are designed to be completed while working full-time. The studies are based on blended learning. There will be two contact days per month. The studies emphasize communality and teamwork. At the beginning of the studies, the students also prepare an individual study plan (ISP) that is closely related to the implementation of the thesis.

The scope of the Master’s thesis is 30 ECTS credits, corresponding to six (6) months of full-time work. However, most theses are completed while working full-time and therefore take clearly longer to complete. A thesis is usually a tangible development project related to the student’s work duties and has the aim of improving the operations, products or processes of the work community. The project usually includes a written report that forms an important component in the assessment process. The students’ work is regularly supervised through thesis seminars and supervisor meetings. The thesis project is a crucial part of the studies and learning process and an important demonstration of expertise.


Competence objectives of the Master's degree are based on the legislation of the universities of applied sciences, and in the European Qualification Framework (EQF). The level corresponding to the Master's degree is 7. The assessment of each course is described in the course plan. The course qualifications vary from the course outcomes, contents and implementation methods.

As the programme offers a Master of Engineering degree that is completed at a University of Applied Sciences, it offers the same qualifications to public offices as a Master’s degree completed at a university. In accordance with the guidelines provided by the Ministry of the Environment, a Master of Engineering degree is considered comparable to the Master of Science (Technology) degree in assessing the skills required for construction studies. The studies required to complete said degrees must yield the expertise required to complete the intended study programme.

Postgraduate study opportunities:
After completing a Master’s degree from a university of applied sciences, students can pursue researcher education at a university (Licentiate or doctoral degree). However, the target faculty is always entitled to impose its own admissions criteria and may require supplementary studies. Supplementary studies are intended to ensure that the student’s initial knowledge is specifically suitable for scientific research.
