Objective

Child, Adolescent and Family Nursing 5 ECTS
The study unit includes 1 ECTS of studies arranged in English

Objectives
Students will
• Understand the status and rights of children as patients and in society and know the principles of nursing children
• Understand the development of children at different stages, know how to promote the healthy growth and development of children and identify any delays/deviations in the growth and development of children
• Know how to support and guide parents and identify the resources and risk factors related to parenthood
• Know how to guide children and families in various situations related to health and diseases
• Know how to promote patient safety in the nursing of children
• Be able to use health care technology in the nursing of children and adolescents
• Know how to adopt a critical approach to searching for, using and evaluating evidence-based knowledge and use it to develop the nursing of children and adolescents
• Know how to determine and document the care needs of a child patient, plan and administer evidence-based nursing and evaluate its effectiveness
• Become proficient in the principles of clinical examination of children of different ages
• Become familiar with common diseases of children and adolescents, as well as their prevention, treatment and rehabilitation methods
• Understand the principles of advanced resuscitation of children
• Understand the pharmacological basics of children’s medication and know how to administer pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy to children and adolescents safely and effectively

Preclinical Training in Child, Adolescent and Family Nursing
Students will
• Learn to perform key examination and care procedures with children and adolescents, recognise the instruments used and use the instruments appropriately and safely
• Learn to observe children and adolescents, as well as to plan, provide and evaluate individual care for children and adolescents in simulated cases.
• Learn to resuscitate a child patient in the hospital environment
• Practice guiding and interacting with children and adolescents of all ages, as well as their families, in situations related to health and illness
• Learn to safely administer pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy to child patients

Content

Contents
• Legislation concerning children, children’s rights and the ethical principles of the nursing of children
• Forms and methods of family nursing
• Monitoring of the growth and development of a healthy child and adolescent and delays/deviations in the development of a healthy child
• The most common paediatric diseases, surgical disorders, infectious diseases and long-term illnesses of children and adolescents and their treatment, rehabilitation and documentation in accordance with the nursing process
• Current evidence-based literature related to the field
• Clinical examination of child patients and the use of various assessment methods to support clinical decision-making
• Preparation of children for procedures, different guidance and education methods and how to include play in treatment
• Assessment of children’s pain and pain management
• Advanced resuscitation of children
• Pharmacology of children and adolescents, different ways of administering medications, monitoring the effectiveness of medication and guidance of pharmacotherapy
• Planning, administration and assessment of fluid therapy for children

Preclinical training contents
• Basic treatment of children, including monitoring children and the nutrition of children
• Communication skills with children of different ages and their families
• Monitoring of growth and development and the related methods
• Observation of child patients
• The most common medical treatment methods for children and adolescents
• Use of health care technology in patient cases
• Resuscitation of child patients
• Administration of pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy and dosage calculations
