Geotechnical EngineeringLaajuus (4 cr)

Code: 5101036

Credits

4 op

Objective

The student knows the basics of soil classification and is able to determine the soil type and the name. The student knows how Finnish bedrock is formed, and identify the most common rock types and minerals. The student knows the most important factors and phenomena related to the dimensioning of earth structures, bearing capacity, frost in the ground, settlements and land slides. He knows the main soil investigations methods and laboratory tests. The student can estimate the frost heaving, settlements and load-bearing properties of different types of soils.

Content

Student will learn the background for the formation of Finnish soil and bedrock and typical soil layers. The classification of soil types will be practiced, and the student will learn the typica soil survey marking methods in the drawings. Student will practice the main factors which will affect to the stability, bearing capacity, settlement and earth pressure with the help of simple calculations. During the course, a geotechnical presentation will be given.
