Study objectives

The International Business Online programme at Turku University of Applied Sciences provides a new and interactive way of acquiring a BBA degree online. Together we develop knowledge and skills through weekly interactive online sessions, working in study teams with authentic projects and work-life oriented methods, guided by experienced online teaching staff.

The pedagogical framework of the International Business Online programme is based on a framework which creates a balanced implementation of pedagogy, technology and content. All teachers in the programme are trained in online pedagogy, thus providing best possible guidance for collaborative and independent study in a fully online environment. The International Business Online programme utilizes technical tools provided and supported by the university.

Our online programme provides you with the knowledge and competences required to undertake responsibilities in an international business environment. You will also gain digital work competencies by studying online. With the help of our international teaching staff and their expertise from various different industries and business areas, you will have the possibility to deepen your knowledge in several areas of international digital business, such as management, marketing, logistics and others based on your own interests.

Study contents

Our curriculum consists of the following components: basic and professional studies, practical training, optional studies and Bachelor’s thesis.

Basic studies will develop your understanding of the key business functions and the dynamics of markets and organizations. You will work online together with other students on projects under the guidance of our teaching staff. Upon completion of the basic studies, you will continue deepening your competences and experience in international business with professional studies.

Professional studies are structured in a way that they provide both a general education in international business and also a practical hands-on training in projects. You will have possibility to work with companies to support their business activities. In addition, our professional studies will also provide the possibility to direct your professional development to specific area of international business. Professional studies consist of core study modules and elective courses which you can customize with the guidance of a teacher tutor to make your individual study plan and meet up your career goals. In preparing yourself for your global business career, an efficient way of learning is to acquire first-hand knowledge and experience in other cultures and market areas. Student exchange offers you additional possibilities for specialization as our partner universities have their own focus areas.

Practical training provides you with work experience in an industry and within an area of your interest. It will also develop your professional networks and help you to identify your career path.

Optional studies provide you with additional possibilities to customize your studies.

Bachelor’s thesis is the final step where you will deepen your knowledge within an industry of your interest. You will undertake an extensive research to i.e. to solve real business problems or to develop an internationalization plan for a company.

Choosing a main subject or field of specialization

The study focuses on business knowledge and competencies required in international business and digital work. The specialization happens through the selection of professional studies, practical training, student exchange and thesis work.

The International Business Online curriculum consists of

- Basic and professional studies 130 ECTS
- Optional studies 30 ECTS
- Practical training 30 ECTS
- Bachelor's thesis 20 ECTS

Final project (Bachelor's thesis)

The aim of the Bachelor's thesis in International Business Online is to deepen the student’s knowledge and competences in the area of international business the student wants to develop expertise in. The thesis demonstrates the research, analytical and reporting skills you have developed throughout your studies.

Career opportunities

Employment research shows that most of the students in International Business degree programmes are employed in a field related to international business before the end of their studies, and many of them are in a leadership position when they start working. Professional courses together with intercultural studies, practical training and thesis work ensure competence for wide career opportunities. The current IB full-time programme alumni work in challenging careers in various business positions, for example as Key Account Manager, Marketing Planner, Sales Coordinator, Supply Chain Specialist, Product Manager, Purchaser, Executive Assistant, Project Manager, Consultant, or Entrepreneur.

Internationalization

The International Business Online degree programme is in itself already a multicultural and international study environment. Studying online allows you to connect and create networks around the world. The teaching staff is international with experience from various parts of the world.

During your studies you have the possibility to go to a student exchange at some of our partner universities. The practical training period can be taken anywhere in the world based on your own interests. TUAS has a wide network of partner universities. Studying abroad can provide a great learning experience for you; you will have the opportunity to experience international cultures and how businesses operate in those environments.

Co-operation with other parties

You can connect with companies through projects and seminars during your studies, or link your current job with your studies. You may take part in research and development (RDI) projects running at TUAS. You can also link your projects and thesis work to your practical training, thus paving the way to working life after your studies.

Research focus

Studies in this programme are partly integrated to various research, development and innovation activities and co-operation projects with companies. Through practical project work, the students will learn those competences which are valuable in today’s growing and strongly internationalizing companies.

Postgraduate study opportunities

After completing your Bachelor’s Degree in International Business Online, you have the possibility to pursue master studies in scientific universities or at a universities of applied sciences (Master of Business Administration – 3 years of work experience is required after the obtaining the BBA). You can apply for example to the MBA Degree Programme in Business Management at Turku University of Applied Sciences.
