COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT AND INTERACTION WITH PATIENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS IN PALLIATIVE CARE 5 ECTS PAL3

Objectives
• Students will know how to recognize, face, support and see to the individual needs of patients and their family members in a comprehensive manner and how to apply physical presence as a mode of support
• Students will understand the significance of crises and grief as a part of the lives of people of different ages and from different cultures
• Students will understand the possibilities of multiprofessional cooperation in the provision of comprehensive support
• Students will understand the concepts of family-oriented approach, involvement and significance and how to apply them in their work
• Students will be able to recognize and predict any changes in the patient’s communication caused by a disease
• Students will know how to apply different modes of communication and tools in place of oral communication
• Students will be able to identify their own view of death and the significance of occupational well-being

Contents
• Paying comprehensive attention to palliative and end-of-life care patients and their family members, dialogue-based interaction and addressing difficult matters
• The purpose and significance of grief
• Culture-sensitive approach to grief and death
• Maintaining hope and significance
• Therapeutic presence and respectful approach as a means of support
• Different modes of support (psychosocial, informative, emotional, psychological, mental and spiritual, existential and practical support)
• Multiprofessional cooperation in comprehensive patient support
• Changes in the patient’s communication, communication methods and tools that support and replace speech
• Reflection on personal life history and perceptions of death and grief, personal ability to cope at work
