Objective

The objective of the course is to raise cultural awereness, understand one´s own cultural identity in comparison with other cultures, and get theoretical background.


After the course, the student will have knowledge of his/her own culture and two other cultures focusing on the society, customs and working life practices of the destination countries. The student understands the characteristics of the destination countries´ cultures and recognises the factors affecting intercultural communication.

The student can adjust his/her own communication taking into account the culture of the destination countries.

The course (5 ECTS) is divided in three different modules.

The first module (1 ECTS, 27 h) is mandatory for all participants and it is implemented in English.

The second module (2 ECTS, 54 h) and the third module (2 ECTS, 54 h) will be chosen by the participants according to their own interest from the following:

The course starts with a Zoom meeting on September 7 at 10:00 - 12:00. It is recommended for all to join the meeting. However, if you cannot join the course info meeting, you should go through the course assignments and objectives on your own. All course material can be found in Itslearning learning environment.


The first module (1 ECTS) is completed by everyone in English 7.9.- 5.10.2023.

In addition to the first module, you need to choose two culture modules ( 2 ECTS + 2 ECTS) from the list below.

Please see the following criteria:

To pass the course, a student is able to

- identify features of one's own culture in comparison to other cultures, and understand what is meant by cultural awareness.
- understand how different stereotypes may affect our behaviour.
-identify cultural differences, values and culture shock. Can also compare one's own culture with the target culture and recognise the different phases of culture shock.
- present and describe key features, events and other aspects of the target country and its culture based on student's own areas of interests.
- apply culture specific manners and norms in working life communication.

To fail the course, a student in not able to
meet the given criteria or has not completed all course assignments according to the instructions.

Grades will be given by 12.5.2023.
