Objective

The student is able to:
- recognize the main components of the internal combustion engine and understand their functioning
- calculate the most important numerical values related to the combustion engine and interpret their meaning
- determine the air supply need of the internal combustion engine and understand the air-fuel ratio
- name different exhaust emission components and know their origin, negative effects and ways to decrease them

Content

ENGINE TECHNOLOGY
- different types of combustion engines
- otto and diesel cycles
- 2 and 4 cycle engines
- cylinder dimensions, stroke-to-bore ratio, mean piston speed
- mean effective pressure
- torque, power and efficiency
- specific fuel consumption
- air-fuel ratio, lambda value
- engine aspiration

EMISSION CONTROL
- fuels - combustion - exhaust gases
- classification of emissions
- effects and harms of different emission components
- transportation originated emissions compared to others
- gasoline engine emissions and their reduction
- diesel engine emissions and their reduction
- measuring methods and legislation of light and heavy-duty vehicles
