Materials

Material available for this course in Itslearning.
Almost any electronics and data transfer book for engineers (introductory level).
In independent study you can also use freely available material online.

Teaching methods

Lectures, preliminary assignments and calculations, lab work.

Exam schedules

Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques:
Main emphasis on preliminary work and labs. One missing / failed lab can be redone at on a predetermined date at the end of the course. Failed test or multiple failed / missing labs can be compensated next year when to course is organized again. Grade for passed lab work cannot be raised.

International connections

Flipped learning, combining theory and practice during lab work.

Completion alternatives

None.

Student workload

Participation in classroom activities: 24 h.
Independent study, preliminary assignments, preparing to lab work and reporting: 100 h.

Evaluation scale

H-5

Assessment methods and criteria

Course consists of two parts:
- Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques (weight 60 %)
- Introduction to electronics and data transfer (weight 40 %)

Both parts need to passed to pass the course.
Missing work receives a grade of -3.

Only tasks returned on time will be evaluated.

Redoing failed or missing parts must be agreed with the teacher separately. Work or parts with passing grade cannot be retaken.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques:
Reports and tests are less than grade 1.

Introduction to electronics and data transfer:
Weighed average from test, homework and lab reports is less than grade 1.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques:
Students can connect components to protoboard and measure voltage, current and resistance. Student knows the basic quantities and laws of electronics. All the weekly assignments have been done and returned on time.

Introduction to electronics and data transfer:
To be specified during course.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques:
Student can apply Ohm's law and Kirchoff's laws to circuit calculations. Understands what power means and how it affects circuits. Weekly preliminary assignments and measurements are mainly correct and reports include relevant data.

Introduction to electronics and data transfer:
To be specified during course.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Introduction to circuits and measurement techniques:
Student can choose correct components based on the requirements, like powerhandling or desired current, and can evaluate the validity of the results. Measurements and calculations are correct. Reports are well written and overall appearance is tidy.

Introduction to electronics and data transfer:
To be specified during course.
