Objective

The aim of the Project Hatchery is that a new student will learn what is studying at Turku University of Applied Sciences and what kind of skills that requires from students. The aim of the Project Hatchery is also to support student’s active and responsible role as a learner not only in the individual level but also as part of a project team involving many students in different fields.

In this study unit a student gets to know students from other disciplines and starts to build networks needed in working life. Moreover, the aim of the Project Hatchery is to provide basic skills for the project working and to support succeeding in the more demanding project study units or modules following years.

Will be delivered in the ItsLearning. Student tutor helps.

Teaching methods

Learning Methods vary according to the team but tasks common for all include project-learning and contact meetings. Study Unit may also have some online studies/session.

No exam, see learning tasks described above.

International connections

Course based on innovation pedagogy, where studying emphasizes working-life oriented and project-based learning methods. In the course student can increase his or her project work skills and become adept at collaborative learning and work. In the course student has an active role and his or her is responsible for his own learning and project implementation. Course is about group working where student tutors' role is to support and direct students working but not participate in the project.

Completion alternatives

AHOT

Student workload

Each project team works in its own project finalize the related outcomes. Individual and group tasks support the project work.

Orientation phase includes a personal and a joined orientation task together with the team. Other team tasks are Project Plan, Poster, Presentation and the Final Report. At the end of this study unit, every student summarizes a personal final reflection on his/her work.

Project hatchery-course includes 133 hours working. About 80 hours is project hatchery working and about 53 hours is project management and reading groups.

Content scheduling

Course includes project working in practice and theory about project management. Each project hatchery has their own real-life project, that group will do independently throughout the course. Course also includes theory part about project management, which includes independent studying and social and cooperative learning in reading groups. These reading groups will be implemented three times during the autumn. Date of the reading groups will be agreed in the group.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation criteria for self- and peer evaluation is 0-5:
Things to evaluate in project hatchery:
• Acquires information and uses it or shares it in project
• Works efficiently and the quality of the work is good (project working)
• Works efficiently and the quality of the work is good (reading groups)
• Get the work/task done in schedule or know how to look for alternative ways
• Develop and experiment with new ways to solve problems.
• Helps the group work/project with their own active work.
• Participates positively in group discussions.
• Notices other opinions and respond to the other comments during the discussions.
• Ask for feedback and comments.

Assessment based on student’s self-assessment, groups peer assessment and student tutor’s assessment. Self- and peer assessment will be made at the end of the course, but student tutor asses constantly during the autumn.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

• Student has not participated project hatchery and reading groups
• Student has not participated in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has not supported the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has not followed jointly agreed rules and schedule
• Student has not returned assignments
• The quality of the tasks done by the student does not correspond to the assignment
• Students motivation must be developed.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

• Student has participated project hatchery and reading groups acceptably way
• Student acceptably participates in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has acceptably supported the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has followed jointly agreed rules and schedule acceptably way
• Student has returned assignments late or after a reminder
• The quality of assignments made by the student is satisfactory
• Students motivation must be developed.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

• Student has participated project hatchery and reading groups well
• Student participates well in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has supported well the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has mainly followed jointly agreed rules and schedule
• Student has returned most of the assignments according to schedule
• The quality of assignments made by the student is well.
• Students motivation is well.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

• Student has participated project hatchery and reading groups commendable way
• Student actively participates in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has significantly supported the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has followed jointly agreed rules and schedule
• Student has returned the assignments according to schedule
• The quality of assignments made by the student is commendable
• Students motivation is commendable

Course based on innovation pedagogy, where studying emphasizes working-life oriented and project-based learning methods. In the course student can increase his or her project work skills and become adept at collaborative learning and work. In the course student has an active role and his or her is responsible for his own learning and project implementation. Course is about group working where student tutors' role is to support and direct students working but not participate in the project.

Each project team works in its own project finalize the related outcomes. Individual and group tasks support the project work.

Orientation phase includes a personal and a joined orientation task together with the team. Other team tasks are Project Plan, Poster, Presentation and the Final Report. At the end of this study unit, every student summarizes a personal final reflection on his/her work.

Project hatchery-course includes 133 hours working. About 80 hours is project hatchery working and about 53 hours is project management and reading groups.

Content scheduling

Course includes project working in practice and theory about project management. Each project hatchery has their own real-life project, that group will do independently throughout the course. Course also includes theory part about project management, which includes independent studying and social and cooperative learning in reading groups. These reading groups will be implemented three times during the autumn. Date of the reading groups will be agreed in the group.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation criteria for self- and peer evaluation is 0-5:
Things to evaluate in project hatchery:
• Acquires information and uses it or shares it in project
• Works efficiently and the quality of the work is good (project working)
• Works efficiently and the quality of the work is good (reading groups)
• Get the work/task done in schedule or know how to look for alternative ways
• Develop and experiment with new ways to solve problems.
• Helps the group work/project with their own active work.
• Participates positively in group discussions.
• Notices other opinions and respond to the other comments during the discussions.
• Ask for feedback and comments.

Assessment based on student’s self-assessment, groups peer assessment and student tutor’s assessment. Self- and peer assessment will be made at the end of the course, but student tutor asses constantly during the autumn.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

• Student has not participated project hatchery and reading groups
• Student has not participated in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has not supported the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has not followed jointly agreed rules and schedule
• Student has not returned assignments
• The quality of the tasks done by the student does not correspond to the assignment
• Students motivation must be developed.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

• Student has participated project hatchery and reading groups acceptably way
• Student acceptably participates in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has acceptably supported the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has followed jointly agreed rules and schedule acceptably way
• Student has returned assignments late or after a reminder
• The quality of assignments made by the student is satisfactory
• Students motivation must be developed.

• Student has participated project hatchery and reading groups well
• Student participates well in interaction situations (discussions in class and outside school, egg Facebook, WhatsApp)
• Student has supported well the groups work and the progress of project
• Student has mainly followed jointly agreed rules and schedule
• Student has returned most of the assignments according to schedule
• The quality of assignments made by the student is well.

Objective

The aim of the Project Hatchery is that a new student will learn what is studying at Turku University of Applied Sciences and what kind of skills that requires from students. The aim of the Project Hatchery is also to support student’s active and responsible role as a learner not only in the individual level but also as part of a project team involving many students in different fields.

In this study unit a student gets to know students from other disciplines and starts to build networks needed in working life. Moreover, the aim of the Project Hatchery is to provide basic skills for the project working and to support succeeding in the more demanding project study units or modules following years.

- working in multidisciplinary project hatcheries and implementing the project
- interaction and communication in project work, presenting the results of the project
- finishing the project, assessment and feedback
