Objectives
Students will
• Understand the treatment path for perioperative patients
• Know how to describe the perioperative treatment process of adult patients
• Learn the principles of asepsis and know how to apply the methods and principles of infection prevention in a surgical ward
• Be able to work in multiprofessional surgical and anaesthetic teams at the different phases of perioperative nursing
• Become proficient in the basic principles and values of surgical and anaesthetic nursing and learn to base their actions on the latest research information
• Understand the special features of pharmacotherapy and fluid therapy for perioperative patients and know how to apply them in patient care
• Become familiar with the most common anaesthetic and analgesic methods
• Know how to prepare patients for anaesthesia and procedures
• Know how to use common patient testing, examination, monitoring and care instruments, analyse the resulting information and act accordingly
• Know how to report on and document the different phases of perioperative treatment
• Learn to identify the special features of counselling and support provided to perioperative patients
• Be aware of the safety risks in surgical and anaesthetic wards and know how to ensure the safety of activities
• Understand the tasks of anaesthetic nurses, circulating nurses and surgeon’s assistants and identify the key instruments used
• Be able to perform immediate postoperative observation in the recovery room
Preclinical Training in Perioperative Nursing
Objectives
Students will
• Learn to perform nursing of surgical patients in a surgical ward
• Learn to carry out the necessary preparations for the patient’s intra-operative care
• Understand the key factors contributing to successful team work in surgical and anaesthetic wards
• Practise the tasks of anaesthetic nurses, circulating nurses and surgeon’s assistants
• Learn to use the key care equipment, supplies and instruments used in anaesthetic and surgical care
• Practise aseptic techniques in different nursing roles in a surgical ward
• Learn to observe and care for patients in the intraoperative and immediate postoperative context
• Practise documenting and reporting of perioperative nursing

• Perioperative nursing (organization, tasks and areas of responsibility in team work, care environment)
• Ethical principles of surgical wards
• Roles and tasks of surgical teams
• Patient and occupational safety in a surgical ward (including infection prevention, asepsis, levels of disinfection, instrument safety, reporting and documentation, use of checklists)
• Disinfection and sterilization methods in perioperative nursing
• Preparing patients in a surgical ward
• Maintaining the body temperature of a surgical patient
• Setting the patient in a proper position for surgery, disinfection and defining the area of operation
• Common treatment equipment, instruments and sutures and assisting in a surgery
• Preparations of a surgical team before a procedure (instrument and supply collection, surgical hand disinfection, sterile clothing, defining the area of operation)
• Treatment of the patient in a recovery room and the criteria of transferring the patient to an inpatient ward

• The operating room as an environment
• Preoperative and intraoperative preparations in surgical and anaesthetic wards and transferring the patient to an operating room
• Care of a patient during a procedure: different nursing roles, duties and team work
• How to use the surgical team checklist
• Observation and care of patients under anaesthesia
• Common operating positions and disinfection of the area of operation
• Collecting instruments and treatment supplies
• Surgical hand disinfection, sterile clothing and defining the area of operation
• Common care equipment, devices and instruments
• Aseptic techniques of surgical wards
• Providing assistance in a surgery
• Tasks related to ending a procedure (supply inventory and equipment maintenance)
• Transferring the patient and immediate postoperative observation and care
• Pharmacotherapy and liquid therapy
Anaesthesiology and Pharmacology 1 ECTS ANFA
• Common methods of anaesthesia , the medications used in them and the effects and phases of these medications in the body
• Preparations for anaesthesia (collecting the medications, preparing the patient monitoring systems and the anaesthesia workstation)
• Observation and care of patients under anaesthesia in the operating and recovery rooms
• Pharmacotherapy and liquid therapy during anaesthesia and in the recovery room
• Pain assessment and management
