Objective
By means of mobile gaming the student: 1. Understands the structure and policies of prehospital emergency care. 2. Applies the methods of systematic patient encountering and assessment in a virtual environment. 3. Chooses the appropriate basic level treatment options and apply them to the patient. 4. Encounters an internal medicine patient in accordance with the basic level emergency care obligations 5. Encounters a patient with altered level of consciousness in accordance with the basic level emergency care 6. Encounters a trauma patient in accordance with the basic level emergency care obligations
Content
This course consists of virtual emergency care scenarios, in which you make decisions about patient assessment and care by playing an educational mobile game. The scenarios are designed in accordance with the basic level emergency care obligations. You will get an exact and structured feedback after every scenario. In the end of the course there is also an evaluation of competence and the student feedback sections. Qualifications
This course is suited for students in prehospital emergency care program and in nursing program. It is recommended for the student to have gone through first year studies(60credits) before this course. This course is also suitable for basic level prehospital emergency care students and for nurses and basic level paramedic workers who are already in the field.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student: - Completes the virtual simulation scenarios according the instructions - Knows how the emergency medical service works (legislation, regulations, obligations, emergency service level decision, co-operation with different officials, support groups) - Applies the five-step model of encountering a patient. - Assesses the patient using the ABCDE -method and the different tools for evaluating the patient (NEWS, VOI IHME, RIVALAISER) - Is able to interpret ECG´s according to the basic level prehospital emergency care demands - Applies basic level emergency care procedures and medical treatments based on the patient’s worst symptom or preliminary diagnosis - Evaluates the patient´s responses for various treatments and checks the treatment guidelines - Documents the patient’s info and findings and consults a physician using the ISBAR -model - Makes the decision for the need of further treatment based on the patient´s state, findings, preliminary diagnosis and response for the care.
