OBJECTIVES:

We will also focus upon TIME and the ways in which you as dancers/choreographers are able to use time in all aspects of your creative/pedagogical work.
A major focus will be upon “Choreo-musical” analysis and practical application of such analysis in creative choreographic/music projects.

We will meet “in-person” unless the situation regarding Covid19 changes to the online setting which will then focus more upon media/sound technology creative projects.

GOALS:

1. To further work with a kinetic sense of time, phrasing, and dynamics which we began in Dance and Music 1 will be continued in Dance and Music 2

2. To continue developing applied percussion skills and notational reading in the form of rhythmic studies, drum circles, and introduction to “accompanying” contemporary technique classes.

3. To continue forward from our JS Bach and Igor Stravinsky projects from in Dance and Music 1, Dance and Music 2 will explore additional Choreo-musical projects and work with specific music selections found from graduates of the University of the Highlands and Islands, Scotland’s Spotify playlist:

Further information will be discussed during our class time regarding this project.

4. To develop creative approaches to environmental arts pedagogy: how to develop projects related to movement that engage children with a kinetic sense of nature, recycling, and general awareness of our earth and its place in the world. Students will attend online CAPE Network ZOOM presentations: Dates to be announced. https://greenactions.turkuamk.fi/cape-network-about/

5. Live Dance and Music Improvisation. The Arts Academy music students work with you dance students in improvisational movement/sound structures. A small number of music students will join us in the Jokisali for these sessions. Time for an informal dialogue/exchange focused on the music students sharing their specific instruments and the overall ways they are studying music in the Arts Academy. The dance students will share the overall ways they are studying dance with the music students. Then both dancers and musicians will have some guided improvisational structures that will be bringing both into an open collaborative relationship through movement and sound. To be confirmed.

ASSIGNMENTS:

1. MOVEMENT STUDIES: In each class, we will explore different aspects of the topics mentioned above. The Environmental theme will be part of much of this creative exploration. MOVEMENT STUDIES MAY be assigned, and they will be presented in the following classes. You will always be given a short amount of class time to prepare the MOVEMENT STUDIES.

The term “environment” is totally open to all aspects of your life: physical & mental perception of what is happening around you, within you, individually, in the community (your hometown, Turku, etc,), & globally. We will discuss this further in the class.

EVALUATION: Your final evaluation (approved/failed, Hyväksytty/Hylätty) for this course Fall 2021 will be based on the following:

1. Attendance: As per the regulations of the Department of Dance. This course has 15 x 90-minute sessions

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL MATERIALS COVERED IN ALL CLASSES. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT ME IN ORDER TO ARRANGE TUTORIAL TIME IF YOU HAVE MISSED ANY CLASS MATERIAL FOR LEGITIMATE REASONS.

You may contact me at david.yoken@turkuamk.fi

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL MATERIALS THAT YOU HAVE MISSED BECAUSE OF YOUR ABSENCE. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTACT ME REGARDING THESE MISSING MATERIALS.

2. Class/group participation: Often the “time studies” will involve GROUP ENSEMBLE structures, and your integration and support of the GROUP ENSEMBLE are essential for the full realization of a specific study.

Some classes will be “project-based” where you will be without me working on choreo-musical and rhythmic materials I have introduced in class.
