Objective

After completing the course the student: understands the common technologies involved in the design and implementation of local and distributed storage systems is able to differentiate the hardware requirements for short and long term storage recognizes the special storage requirements for virtualization is able to design and implement small-scale storage systems is able to integrate storage systems into an existing enterprise network knows the security demands for storage systems.

Content

storage devices Network Attached Storage Storage Area Networks performance issues in storage systems deduplication, backup, virtualization storage system security

Teaching methods

The students will install and configure their own storage systems, using the available hardware. A hands-on approach is preferred over theoretical studies.

Remote access to the hardware will be provided, i.e. students will work remotely. Zoom or Teams sessions are arranged instead of labs; the first session on the 31st of August is held in premises.

Exam schedules

There are no exams.

International connections

The students will have to do a lot of individual work; the teacher produces a minimal amount of learning material, but is available in the lab for assistance and short lectures on specific topics.

Completion alternatives

There are no alternative ways to complete this course.

Content scheduling

File/device sharing protocols, RAID systems, Storage Area Networks, Network Attached Storage

Evaluation scale

H-5

Assessment methods and criteria

The students will write reports / portfolios / diaries about their work and learning. More information will be provided as the course goes on.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

No report returned; excessive absence, i.e. not working with the group.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

The group demonstrates their learning in their report, but fails to show more than a shallow understanding of the topics. Quite a lot of assistance is required.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

The group shows good understanding of the topics in their report. The report is consistently written and formatted. They work mostly on their own, being able to search for information instead of asking the instructor.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The group shows excellent knowledge of the subject, both on paper and during online sessions.
