Welfare and Health Promotion 2 cr TETO
Objectives
Students will
- Have insight into the population’s health, functional capacity and well-being, as well as the current challenges and factors affecting them
- Know how to make use of existing information (e.g. registers and statistics) regarding population-wide health challenges of individuals and communities
- Understand how social decision-making and structures, as well as economic premises influence the promotion of health and functional capacity
- Be familiar with the main regulations and action programmes guiding the promotion of health and functional capacity
- Have knowledge of the aspects and approaches of the promotion of health and functional capacity
- Understand the key contents and methods related to the promotion of health and functional capacity and the prevention of illnesses and accidents, incl. preventive mental health and substance abuse work, nutrition guidance, sexual health and health-enhancing physical activity

- The status of the population’s health and well-being (resources and challenges) and health-related factors (protective and burdening factors)
- Sources of health disparities and social exclusion (socio-economic status)
- Regulations and action programmes guiding the promotion of health and functional capacity
- Factors weakening public health and their prevention
- Economic perspectives on health promotion
- Levels of health promotion (individual, community, society) and approaches (promotion and prevention)
- Key contents and methods in the promotion of health and functional capacity
- Prevention of illnesses, accidents and health issues
- Early identification of risk factors and the provision of support to those in need of it
- Identifying needs for change, defining objectives and agreeing on the methods to achieve the objectives
- The principles of monitoring and evaluating health results and impacts
- Effective methods for promoting health and functional capacity
