Course unit information
Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies (LBMS) is a teaching and learning system based on”Laban Movement Analysis” and “Bartenieff Fundamentals” , internationally applied in movement pedagogy, movement therapy and in the arts of movement and performance.
Studying and applying movement observation is supporting a multidimensional and comprehensive knowledge on movement theory and practice. The student will learn to integrate outer and inner experience of movement.
Objectives
The student is developing skills in movement observation, movement analysis and movement notation within the teaching and learning system in theory and practice of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies.
The student is able to apply basic knowledge of Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies in its own movement and dance practicing. The student understands the role of LBMS in movement education.
Content
- Learning to understand and integrate movement observation and analysis :
-by learning and applying exercises and work-tools of the systems of Bartenieff Fundamentals and Laban Movement Analysis in the Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies (LBMS)
- Bartenieff Fundamentals: exercising principles, themes, developmental movement patterns
- Biography Irmgard Bartenieff: in reference to history/dance
- generating embodied knowledge
- Movement observation , movement analysis and movement notation using the system of Laban Movement Analysis
- Biography Rudolf Laban: in reference to history/ dance history
- Space: general space, personal space (Kinesphere), approach to kinesphere, use of dimensions, dimensional scale, diagonal scale

- Learning the “Movement Alphabet”: Motif Writing – a simplified version of Labanotation/ Kinetography
Objective
Opiskelija kehittää tieto- ja taitoperustan tanssiliikkeen analyysiin ja arviointiin metodisissa ja koreografisissa opinnoissa.
Tanssin liikeanalyysi: Opiskelija osaa analysoida liikettä Effort-Shape analyysin periaatteiden mukaan ja hyödyntää Effort-Shape analyysiä tanssinopettajan työssään. Opiskelija osaa tulkita motiivikirjoitusta.
Tanssin teosanalyysi: Opiskelija soveltaa omaksumaansa perustason tietopohjaa tanssin teosanalyysissä ja hallitsee tanssiteosanalyysin. Opiskelija hallitsee omatoimisen tiedonhankinnan teostuntemuksesta.

Student workload
Movement Observation Task (max.2x 90 min. in school/90 min.home)
- learning to note observation with the help of a “coding sheet” (theory in class)
- class work: observing in partner work – observations of the other’s moving
- method: ticking – quantity/ amount of seen parameters of Bartenieff Fundamentals (Principles, Basic 6, Developmental patterns)
- class discussion/ reflection
- homework:
a) choreographing a warming up series of exercises (max.5) choosing from Bartenieff Fundamentals material
b) videotaping the own moving of the movements
c) noting (words) self-observation of doing/ sensing/proprioceptive
d) noting observations (coding sheet) after watching self on video
e) written reflection (100-150 words)

- active participating during contact class
-showing growth in active use and application of LBMS in own movement practise
