Content scheduling
Lectures and exercises are conducted alternately on a weekly basis. The course includes essential components such as lecture exams, a final project, home assignments, and various exercises. Before attending the exercises, students must familiarize themselves with the instructional videos on different CAD functions available on Itslearning.
Objective
After completing the course, the student:
- can create product documentation unambiguous using markings and line types in accordance with technical drawing standards
- can size and determine tolerances in accordance with standards, considering functionality, manufacturability, and impact on the manufacturing costs of the part
- knows the management of technical product information standardization, which includes technical product documentation and geometric product specification
- knows the concepts, principles, and rules of geometric product specification (GPS)
- knows the principles of PDM systems for managing product information.
Content
- 2D drawing
- Representation of dimensions and tolerances
- Geometric product specification (GPS)
- Technical product documentation
- Product Data Management (PDM)
Materials
Aimo Pere: Koneenpiirustus 1 & 2. NOTE! Latest edition! (A group order for the book will be decided in the first lecture.)
Product documentation standards, available with a license from the SFS website.
Lecture slides, which students can access on Itslearning.
Teaching methods
The course includes essential components such as lectures, exercises, home assignments, and a final project. The final project is completed in groups of 2-3 students, while remote assignments are done independently. Independent study is also required to familiarize oneself with the functions of AutoCAD Mechanical before the exercises.
Exam schedules
Weekly exams are held during the lecture following each lecture week, with a total of six weekly exams.
Students may also choose to take the full course exam, which is scheduled for the final lecture session. During this session, students can also complete any missing weekly exams or attempt to improve a failed weekly exam. A maximum of four weekly exams can be taken at once. If a student has more than four missing or failed weekly exams, they must take the full course exam. The average of the weekly exams is the "exam grade."
A failed weekly exam can only be retaken once. If the student fails again, they must take the full course exam. A passed lecture exam cannot be retaken. If a student wishes to improve their average of the weekly exams, they must participate in the full course exam.
Make-up exams after the final lecture session will be held on Wednesdays at 16:00 during weeks 50, 3, and 7. Students must register for the exam one week in advance using the registration tool in Itslearning. Students are allowed one attempt to improve a passing grade (the highest grade will be recorded) and two attempts to retake a failed exam.
International connections
The course aims to integrate a work-life-oriented approach: lectures include real-world examples of how product documentation is implemented in the industry and what potential key challenges may arise. Students are also trained for design tasks by providing fundamental skills and theoretical knowledge needed for design work.
A crucial aspect of product documentation is the manufacturing technology perspective, which is considered in lectures depending on the topic. Additionally, students apply knowledge from other courses while working on their final project.
To foster modern teaching and learning abilities, students are expected to take an active, engaged role and take responsibility for their own studies. Throughout the course, the instructor acts as a mentor, guiding students toward the right solutions and facilitating moments of insight.
Completion alternatives
There are no optional completion methods for this course.
Student workload
The course is worth 5 ECTS credits, with the workload distributed as follows:
Lectures: 27 hours (including the exam)
Exercises: 24 hours (including independent study before attending exercises)
Home assignments: 38 hours
Final project: 45 hours
Further information
Communication between the teacher and students takes place via Itslearning. Students can contact the teacher via email or WhatsApp. A dedicated WhatsApp group will be created for the course, and joining details will be provided in the first lecture. Joining the group is not mandatory, as all necessary information will also be available on Itslearning.
