After completing the course the student
- Understands the principles of, and steps involved in, mathematical modeling and 3D simulation of heat transfer, elastic structures and/or fluid mechanics; grid generation, meshing, initial/boundary conditions, solution and postprocessing.
- Understands statistical design of experiments and their relation to robust and optimal design
- Understands the principles of optimization by surrogate models.
- Can carry out 3D simulations for simple mechanical engineering design optimization problems using ANSYS simulation software.

Sisältö

This course introduces the students to the principles of optimal design by computational simulations. The topics covered vary between fluid mechanics, structural mechanics and heat transfer, the key being composition of realistic 3D computer simulation model(s) of the product or process to be designed. Optimization of the design can then be carried out by changing the design parameters in the simulations in a controlled way.
- 3D solid modeling / ANSYS SpaceClaim
- Computational Mechanics / ANSYS Fluent or Mechanical
- Statistical design of experiments / MATLAB
- Learning design optimization through brief project assignments
