Bars in compression or in tension, rivets or screws in pure shear and beams in bending. In the case of bars and in some shearing conditions, both stresses and deformations are considered. However, in the case of beams, only stresses are considered and the computation of deformations or deflections are left to the following course Advanced Strength of Materials.
