Objective

The students will be able to
• expand their knowledge of contemporary painting
• position their personal style of expression in relation to the field of contemporary art
• consider their expression from the aesthetic and ethical perspective
• actively study and analyse phenomena in regional, national and global fine art and obtain information independently on phenomena and artists that support the students’ personal exploration into their own expression.

Content

The course concentrates on the creation of a collection of paintings and deepening the acquired painting skills. The students will create a series of works and display them in a space provided or that of the student’s own choice. The students will give a presentation about their painting process, analysing the relevance of the documented expression and content together with the group. The students are expected to actively participate in instruction and feedback discussions.

Written source material provided by the teacher.

Teaching methods

Face-to-face teaching; task-based content discussions and guided practice, lectures and group discussions. Excursions and possible visits to artists' studios.

International connections

Students work with the artist teacher, reflecting and discussing during studio tours and viewings. The studio tour is a pedagogical approach to visual arts in which the teacher tours the painting studio and the guiding discussion takes place at the student's workstation.

Student workload

The student will do practical work and attend weekly lectures, possible excursions and demonstrate professional working skills during the three weeks. Working hours are Tue-Fri 9am-4pm. Tuesdays are model painting days - in which case working 9am-4pm is a prerequisite for credit. On Fridays, independent work or participation in a model drawing class. During the course, students can create works using different painting techniques according to their interests and expression.

Content scheduling

The course will take place 25.2.-20.3.2025. Places of work: Large painting room (F209), Academy of Fine Arts.
The exact schedule will be communicated by e-mail to those accepted for the course.

Painting Expressions is a continuation of the course Painting Expressions II. The course develops painting expression and delves deeper into the tradition of painting and the content of contemporary painting. The aim is also to develop colour perception. Students will complete a series of paintings or a set of paintings. On Tuesdays, a model painting day - working from 9 am to 4 pm is a prerequisite for the course.

The course provides students with basic materials, such as painting primers and common colours. However, students should be prepared to purchase their own brushes, painting canvas or primers, a palette knife, paper plates for palettes, plastic gloves, pine sap for washing brushes, and gesso for priming.

Assessment methods and criteria

At the end of the course, there will be a joint assessment discussion in which participants will demonstrate their knowledge of the topic both verbally and through exercises.

Assessment criteria, fail (0)

Tasks have not been completed or do not correspond to the assignment. Absences from face-to-face teaching more than 80%.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student
- can apply the given instructions to their own work
- can use key professional concepts and tools and apply them to their own expression
- participate in dialogue in community interaction situations.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, the student
- can plan their own work and identify the stages of their working process
- be able to estimate and measure the time required for study/work
- demonstrate knowledge of the principles and concepts of the method
- work and act in accordance with ethical and ecological principles
- is able to develop and deepen his/her personal expression

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student
- can place their work in a broader context and in the field of contemporary art
- be able to analyse and develop the stages of their working process
- be able to critically analyse different solutions
