Mechanical Engineering: Machine automation technology
Code: PKONTK25
Descriptions
Structure of studies and courses in degree programme Mechanical and Production Engineering are described in curriculum.
The professional background of the mechanical engineering degree program consists of design, construction, development, operation and control of products, devices and machineries of mechanical engineering. The aim of the studies is to achieve the basic knowledge of the main areas of the mechanical engineering to ensure wide career opportunities in trade and industrial sectors.
Learning in mechanical engineering studies is based on innovation pedagogy. It means that learning is active and social action by students, who are responsible of their learning by themselves. Motivation and positive attitude are the basis of life-long studies. Studies are made in close co-operation with working life.
Learning and teaching methods are versatile, including contact lessons, problem based learning, virtual courses, laboratory work, practical works and project works.
The degree program in mechanical engineering contains basic studies, professional studies, optional studies, a Bachelor’s thesis and practical training. Courses including marketing, sales, business and/or foreign languages are highly recommended as optional studies (15 ects).
Internationalization is part of the studies from the beginning of the studies. Foreign languages are trained in their own courses, but also many course material and many reports and project works are carried out in english. It's highly recommended to students to achieve work and study experience in foreign countries during studies.
The student is given support in making his/her personal study plan and curriculum, in solving study problems and in managing different problem situations of life. Guidance is also used to prevent discontinuation of studies by supporting students in making the right choices. The tutor teacher gives individual and group guidance, guides the student's learning and his/her study process, supports the student in the making of his/her personal study plan and provides practical assistance. The student tutorsupports and guides new students and familiarizes them with the studies and the study environment. Support is also given to process the bachelor's thesis.
Objective
The programme will develop student’s practical skills that are required in working life. These include, in particular, communication and interaction skills as well as IT skills. Working life requires continuous self-development as well as network competences. In addition to these innovation competences, the emphasis is on the substantive competence of the various fields of technology as well as business, quality and environmental and international expertise. The goal of the programme is to become a self-imposed, team builder, and an engineer with a strong orientation-oriented professional identity.
Training provides the basic knowledge and skills needed in the labor market and provides the skills required by the authorities, as well as the ability to continually develop their own skills. The aim of the programme is to provide the skills to develop a wide range of professional skills that are required in working life, such as, leadership, teamwork and networking skills, critical thinking skills, and creativity.
Development
The students learn to take responsibility for their studies and acquire new study skills. The studies include contact lessons and independent studies of business literature as well as assignments, practical training and team work. Cooperation with companies plays an essential role throughout the studies. Commissions from companies enhance learning and create contacts and networks for working life and innovation competences are trained by applying theory into practice.
Pedagogic solutions contribute to the students’ ability to work in changing conditions and their ability to adopt the concept of lifelong learning.
Further information
Studies are evaluated on the basis of oral and written examinations, exercises and other performances. The grading scale is excellent (5), good (4 and 3), satisfactory (2 and 1), passed and failed.
The programme uses a variety of evaluation methods to review the quality of the programme. The programme is developed together with companies. A variety of methods is used to find out students’ views: eg. module feedback, annual feedback questionnaires and conversations with student representatives.
