The students improve their English skills and know how to use English language materials relevant to higher education studies. The students can communicate understandably in English in different kinds of situations both in written and spoken language.
Content
The course includes the basics of the English language. It offers the chance to practice oral and written communication situations and to increase the courage to use the English language. An essential target is to produce clear, logical and readable texts in different styles. The material used in spoken and written tasks is related to the field of nursing, such as the concepts, service systems, working life situations and ethics. In addition, the students develop their language learning techniques (e.g. reading professional texts, studying vocabulary).

Teaching methods
Teaching takes place twice a week on campus. The student works both independently, regardless of location, and collaboratively with the rest of the study group. Inquiry-based learning, flipped learning, and self-reflection are key learning methods in the course.
International connections
The study contents are professional and work-life oriented. Additionally, students are guided to explore a field of health and well-being that interests them. The international nature of the student group enhances everyone's cultural awareness, emphasizing communal learning in the studies.

Student workload
The learning tasks consist of submission assignments, homework, and tasks completed during class. Detailed instructions are given in meetings and are also available on Itslearning.
The course is worth 5 credits, which equals 135 student work hours. The course takes place over 9 weeks.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
Fail (0)
The student has not achieved the course objectives. The student recognizes and can use only a few concepts from the course topics and cannot apply what they have learned. The student has not completed all the given tasks.
Pass
The student has achieved the course objectives, although there may still be areas for improvement in knowledge and skills. The student can use the concepts from the course topics and apply what they have learned in study and work situations. The student can analyze their own language skills. The student has completed all the given tasks.
Content scheduling
The course takes place during weeks 15-23.
This course will cover reviewing basic structures of English, practicing various professional oral and written communication situations, and developing confidence in using English.

The course includes weekly meetings with other students and the teacher.
The course cannot be completed independently.
A computer and internet connection are required for the studies.

The course is completed when all given tasks are successfully done. The course includes written and oral assignments evaluated by the teacher, peer and self-assessment, and independent preparation for meetings.
