Teaching methods

Pre-assignment: Participants analyze the most relevant topics in the conference programme from the point of view of their organisations.

Week 1 Seminar Presentations (https://globalgateway.turkuamk.fi/en/ilw-2024/)
• Students will participate in six seminar presentations covering various topics of DEIB relevant to their field of study or professional interests.
• Each presentation will be followed by an individual written reflection journal where students discuss key takeaways, insights, and questions arising from the presentation.

Week 2-4: Focused Research
• Based on their reflections from the seminar presentations, students will choose 1-3 DEIB topics they wish to explore further.
• Students will identify and read relevant articles, papers, and other scholarly sources.
• They will critically evaluate the current state of knowledge in their chosen areas and identify gaps or areas for further investigation.

Week 5-7: Organizational Analysis
• Using the knowledge gained from the presentations and readings, students will analyse how the selected DEIB focus areas are addressed within their own organizations or within organizations relevant to their field.
• Students will identify strengths and weaknesses in current practices related to the DEIB focus areas and propose potential improvements based on their analysis.
• The analysis will be presented in the form of a presentation, accompanied by recommendations for organizational change or improvement.

A synthesis of all above mentioned (theory and analysis) will be written as a blog post format https://talkbystudents.turkuamk.fi/ or a a seminar/conference poster in a DEIB related seminar.

Content scheduling

This course is designed to enhance students' critical thinking abilities and organizational analysis capabilities. Through participating in seminar presentations (e.g. https://globalgateway.turkuamk.fi/en/ilw-2024/) and conducting focused research, students will explore key topics of Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) relevant to their field of study or professional interests. DEIB is viewed through the lens of Multilingualism and Cultural Understanding. They will reflect on their learning experiences, deepen their understanding of specific areas of interest, and apply their knowledge to analyze and propose improvements within their own organizations.

The scale is passed/failed. The assessment is based on:
• Participation in Seminar Presentations (listener or presenter)
• Reflection Journal
• Organizational Analysis
• A synthesis of theory and analysis, written as a blog post format. (if you have given a presentation during the conference, this task is compensated by the presentation!) or a seminar/conference poster in a DEIB related seminar.
