Objective

The objective is to understand the structure and functioning of the internal combustion engine as well as its emissions and environmental effects.

Contents: ENGINE TECHNOLOGY- different types of combustion engines- otto and diesel cycles- 2 and 4 cycle engines- cylinder dimensions, stroke-to-bore ratio, mean piston speed- mean effective pressure- torque, power and efficiency- specific fuel consumption- air-fuel ratio, lambda value- engine aspiration EMISSION CONTROL - fuels - combustion - exhaust gases- classification of emissions- effects and harms of different emission components- transportation originated emissions compared to others- gasoline engine emissions and their reduction- diesel engine emissions and their reduction- measuring methods and legislation of light and heavy-duty vehicles- the greenhouse effect and climate change
