Weeks 37-41
- The implementation starts online in Zoom: Part 1 (3 ECTS): Biomaterials Processing (Quality systems and requirements for biomaterials and manufacturing methods of different types of biomaterials) ; Week 37-39, group report deadline before the oral presentation of the group task on Week 39 and individual report deadline October 4, 2020.
After Part 1, the implementation of the course continues as described below in "Part 2", or as a research work implementation. This is due to uncertainty regarding the final number of students participating and Covid-19 situation. The final form of implementation will be decided in Mid-September. If the decision is to continue with the research work implementation, separate instructions are provided on Week 39 at the latest.
- Part 2 (2 ECTS, in Zoom or in class or as hydbrid): Bionanotechnology; basic methods of preparation and how nanotechnology is utlised in biomaterials preparation, e.g., in controlled drug delivery and diagnostics; Weeks 40-41; group report deadline before the discussion of the group task on Week 41 and individual report deadline October 23, 2020.
NB! If the research work implementation will be the final one, the aim is to implement not only the Part 2 of the "Biomaterials Manufacturing Processes", but the rest of the module Biomaterials and Bioprocesses 2 as research work. In other words, if the research work implementation will be started you get 3 ECTS for the Part 1 of "Biomaterials Manufacturing Processes" for the online implementation, but 12 ECTS from the research work implementation (2 ECTS for Part 2 of "Biomaterials Manufacturing Processes" , 5 ECTS for "Biotechnological Production", and 5 ECTS for "Methods in Biotechnology").
In the research work implementation, a separate learning agreement is signed, and separate instructions are provided for reporting and integration of theory into the reports. The reporting consists of an individual report and 2-3 group reports, 1-2 intermediate group reports in November and/or December, and the final group report in January 2021. 1-2 intermediate group report(s) will be combined into the final report. In December, each participant will also return an individual report on the theory part of the course. The absolute final deadline for the final report is 31 January 2021, and there is no possibility to raise the grade or to return the report later. However, if you want feedback on your report before the deadline, you have to return you report 15 January 2021 at the latest, and you will get within 10 days some comment to correct or improve the report.

Oppimateriaalit
The group tasks are based on scientific articles/patents and lecture materials provided in Optima. The individual task is based on the oral reports of the other groups, notes made in class and on 2-3 articles/patents of the other groups (links are available in Optima).
Opetusmenetelmät
Team-based learning in groups (same groups in the both parts of the course) resolving a Group Task, Individual tasks to complement Group Tasks and summarise the group tasks of the other groups, Group presentation both for substance and communication skills, Task reports & presentations in English. Information retrieval from Journal and Patent databases is an important part of the tasks.
Tenttien ajankohdat ja uusintamahdollisuudet
No actual course exam.
Pedagogiset toimintatavat ja kestävä kehitys
Team-based learning in student groups (international groups if high enough number international students participating) by resolving tasks, Real company examples in background materials, Teachers plan the content together (same pedagogic principle in both parts). Information retrieval from journal and patent databases has a central role.
Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat
2-3 students may conduct the course (only) by working in the the research group (New Materials and processes). This type of the implementation has to be agreed separate with the instructors (Mika Jokinen).
Opiskelijan ajankäyttö ja kuormitus
The emphasis is in the team-based learning by solving tasks in the groups:
Contact sessions: 26-30 h, rest as Group and individual tasks
Tasks work is conducted continuously on every week of the course. The work is done both in groups (of 2-3 members) and individually.
There are 1 group task and 1 individual task / part.
Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
Evaluation is based on tasks reports and laboratory work. In the research work implementation separate evaluation criteria are defined in a separate learning agreement.
