Tavoitteet
The aim of the course is to give students the English language and communication skills that they need in their studies in the IT field. The students will revise language structures, practice pronunciation and fluency, and develop academic study and writing skills. They will also learn to use field-specific terminology in various spoken and written situations. In addition, they will read field-specific texts, produce clear and coherent texts, as well as hold discussions and present information. As a result, the students will gain confidence and skills in using English in a professional manner by developing their skills in subject-specific contexts.

Upon successful completion, the student is able to:
- avoid plagiarism and develop academic study skills, such as note-taking and summarizing
- write academic texts relevant to studies
- use field-specific terminology
- present oneself and the field of study
- read and understand field -specific texts
- start and maintain a discussion on field -specific topics
- give a confident, well-structured presentation relevant to studies

Pedagogiset toimintatavat ja kestävä kehitys
The contents and the assessed outputs of the course are designed to provide the students with English language communication skills they need in working life especially when working in projects. Examples include producing instructions and reports, organizing physical and online meetings and producing the relevant documents and emails, collaborative writing and presentation of results. In addition, the students have to complete tasks individually, in pairs and as a group which enhances their communication and interpersonal skills. The assessment is continuous and teacher and peer assessment is provided after the completion of each task.
Toteutuksen valinnaiset suoritustavat
A: The student can complete the English for IT (5 ECTS) and complete Accreditation of Prior Learning based on Competence (not transfer of credits):
Within two weeks prior since the course start, student submits a video and a written report showcasing expertise in oral and written work place communication and professional communication. The report must include concrete examples of work place communication (e.g. meetings, negotiations, written reports, instructions, emails and so on). If the submission fulfils the assessment criteria, student can attain the credits. If the submission does not meet the criteria, student joins the course.
B: The student can complete the English for IT (5 ECTS) and complete Transfer of Credits within the first two weeks of the course if the student has completed a course with the same credits and similar content at a samel level (higher education)) educational institution within the last 5 years. The student will also need to provide an official transcript and course content description.

Arviointimenetelmät ja arvioinnin perusteet
Each theme has a relevant assessed task, which can yield 0-2 points. In addition up to 2 points max are given for active participation and preparation. In total, the student can yield 12 points. All assessed outputs must be completed on time. Late assessed outputs may not yield any points. The student needs to accumulate 5 points to pass with grade 1. Class attendance is compulsory. Peer-assessed tasks are accompanied with evaluation criteria.
Theme 1 assessed output: Professional profile (individual, written & oral task, teacher & peer assessment)
Theme 2 assessed output: a set of instructions (individual, written or multi-media task, teacher & peer assessment)
Theme 3 assessed output: a collaborative written report (pair, written task, teacher assessment)
Theme 4 assessed task output: a presentation (pair, oral task, teacher and peer assessment)
Theme 5 assessed outcome: an online meeting portfolio including documents, emails and an online meeting and evaluation (group, oral and written task, teacher assessment and self–reflection)
