English Professional Skills, B2
Creative and Functional English for Dancers
This will be a ZOOM course held in the classrooms as indicated on the schedule (Page 2 - 3)
As a class, you are responsible to bring a laptop with the proper HDMI port (PC) or Mac port that will connect to the video project and sound systems
in the classrooms (H217 and H330)
Objectives:
The aim of the course is to activate and develop the students’ field-relevant English language and communication skills. The students will gain professional skills in various spoken and written communicative situations encountered in working life and society. In addition, they will learn to utilize tools and techniques to further develop their skills in authentic, field-specific contexts. More specifically, students will focus on developing their language and communication skills through functional exercises related to their field as dance-artist teachers. Upon completing the course, the students should have acquired skills to communicate at level B2 according to European Framework of Reference for Languages, which states that at B2-level students should be able to produce clear, coherent and well-structured texts, present detailed descriptions related to one’s field of interest, express and exchange opinions using fluent language, follow complex arguments, and read longer articles and reports.
Assignments will be guided towards the "real world" use of English language materials and the skills required for international project applications. These include preparation, and production of English CVs, as well as small examples of media-related promotional materials, all focused towards producing possible after graduation successful international collaborative projects.

Working in a group of 4 dancers your team will prepare a brief amount of material that you can teach to your classmates via ZOOM. The material you make for this teaching can be based on your ZOOM experiences from last spring. In fact, you certainly can use that material, but simply teach it in English. So, there will be 2 classes with 4 of dancer teachers each.
English Language Video Productions
1. English Choreographers from Finland Video Presentation: Working in pairs, you will create a 5 to 10-minute video presentation about a living Finnish contemporary choreographer. Make sure there is copyright free video documentation about the specific choreography you have selected. So 4 Finnish choreographers will be presented.
2. English Dance Promotional Video: THIS CAN BE MADE IN PAIRS, SO THERE ARE 4 PAIRS FOR THE 8 OF YOU… PAIRS WORKING TOGETHER AS YOU SAW IN EMMA AND VAPPE’S VIDEO This will be a 3 to 5-minute dance promotional video that you could upload to a website and be used for any future possible vocational/employment situations where you need to present yourself in English. Please use Creative Commons / copyright free music.
EVALUATION: Your final evaluation for this course will be based upon the completion of the assigned written and video material. Further the quality and your ability to clearly (simply) communicate your ideas in English will contribute to your final grade. Your active participation in and contribution to the class discussions will be play a large role in the final grade you receive.

Tavoitteet
