Content scheduling

The course explores public art processes and design premises. Students are trying out ways to design temporary works in the public space, which this time is the windows inside and facade of Educity, the new campus building of Turku AMK.

The course serves as a common framework that allows each participant to develop their own artistic work, share experiences on online platforms, and regularly receive constructive feedback from the teacher as well as classmates in the context of Zoom appointments.

We begin with a joint gathering at Zoom on 6 April at 10 a.m., to present the content and schedule of the course in more detail. It is possible to book a series of individual conversations with the teacher for 30 min. via the doodle weekly (the link will be emailed to you).

The point is that during the course an idea for a public public artwork emerges. The theme is the SHOICE box and our time: what they mean right now for everyone, what kind of specs are of interest, what kind is your window to the world right now, how you handle it, etc.

The implementation includes four parts

1. Lectures & Discussions
• During the course, 3 lectures are held in Zoom.
• Conversations based on lectures
• If you are unable to attend the lecture, please inform Susana.

2. Articles & Breakout Room Discussions
• Read two articles
• Conversations in the Breakout Room

3. Learn about artists working in public art
• Explore and search for artists or collectives active in public art.
• Write a free form text to showcase the artists you find. Also, attach to the work pictures.
• What thoughts will wake up to you about the works? What about public space as a place of art making?
• Introduce to other students in the course (5 min.)

4. Design mission: Idea for public artwork, themed as a window of time
Ideate a work that can either be executed on the window/windows of Educity's facade or the interior. Pitching initial work ideas in the 14.4. zoom (tell us about your idea and implementation max. 5 min/student). Introduction of the final work idea on 28.4. and return pdf format max 5 MB via email to Susana.

You can design a idea alone or remotely with a pair or in a working group.

Objective

The students will be able to
• make use of the methods of spatial and time-based art in a professional, responsible, safe and environmentally sustainable manner.
• follow the permit and contracting procedures applicable for the art form.
• operate in a dialogue with their group and evaluate their own collaboration with other parties.
• see an installation as part of a space and its environment and recognize the special characteristics of the art form.
• evaluate the expressive potential of different forms of art in the development of their own work.
• discuss and evaluate in a constructive manner the processes of their own artistic work.
• allocate the right amount of time for study/the creation of a work.

Content

• spatial and time-based art, their methods and modes of expression, artists working in this field, and the theory behind the media
• permits, contracts and budgeting and other practicalities related to the art form
• safe and environmentally sustainable methods
• creation of a site-specific work, installation and/or public work of art as a team or an individual project
• documentation and reporting

Evaluation methods and criteria

At the end of the course, a joint assessment discussion is held, after which the student reflects on what they have learned in writing. The evaluation focuses on the student's own development and the development of theoretical and practical processes, not the artistic result.

Tasks have not been done or do not correspond to the assignment and have not participated in joint meetings, lectures, etc.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1-2)

Student
• is able to apply the given instructions to their own work
• Is able to use key professional concepts and tools and apply them to his / her own expression
• participates dialogically in community interaction situations.

Assessment criteria, good (3-4)

In addition to the above, the student
• is able to plan his / her own work and identify the stages of his / her work process
• is able to evaluate and measure the time required for study / job preparation
• works and operates in accordance with ethical and ecological principles
• is able to develop and deepen one's personal expression
• is able to place his work in the wider context and in the field of contemporary art

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the above, the student
• Demonstrate mastery of the critical overlap of selected materials, working methods, and content with contemporary art discourses
• is able to analyze and develop the stages of his / her working process
• Is able to critically analyze different solution models
